What is Starlink?

Starlink is the name of a satellite network founded by Ellon Musk, from the private spaceflight company SpaceX, to provide low-cost internet to remote locations. The internet service is high speed, low latency, broadband internet (connecting to 60 satellites in 2019, with permission to fly 12,000 in 2021).

The company has reached the end of their BETA testing service and therefore it is now a very exciting time for people who need high speed internet in otherwise uncontactable, desolate areas.

Starlink is available to a limited number of users per coverage area at this time. However, the more satellites placed into space, the more areas of coverage become available.

Orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. To begin, head to their website http://starlink.com and type in your postal/zip code to see if it is offered in your area.

Who is Starlink Satellite Internet For?

To get an idea of who Starlink is specifically useful for, look at your current internet usage. Ask yourself what you will be using your internet for — do you need quick loading speeds for working from home, to connect multiple devices, or for heavy software usage? For convenience? Can’t get high speed internet from any other provider?

The kinds of people who will benefit the most from Starlink:

  • People Who Work From Home
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Content Creators
  • Homeschooling Parents
  • Medium to Large Families
  • Those Having Multiple Devices Connected to The Internet
  • Designers, Gamers, Tech Savvy People
  • Programmers, Technicians
  • Those Who Live in Rural Areas
  • Cottagers, Campers
  • Frequent Downloaders
  • Constant Streamers
  • Online Software Users
  • Anyone in a Remote Location
  • Those Building a Home in a Remote Location

If you live in an urban setting, with many high rise buildings around, it would not be worth the frequent downtimes. You would be better off with a fibreOP high speed connection from popular service providers like Rogers or Bell.

Starlink Start-Up Cost in Canada and The US

The initial start-up cost to order your Starlink package in Canada, you’re looking at a $129 CAD deposit when you sign up. And then, once your Starlink Kit is available to ship, $677 CAD for the remainder of the balance which includes the shipping and handling.

The monthly payment for Starlink’s unlimited Internet is $129 CAD/month plus tax. My first monthly bill payment charge was for $145.77 Canadian. Remember, you have the potential to garner in the 100’s mbps which is absolutely worth the price, in my eyes.

In the US, the cost is $99 USD/month with a $499 USD start up cost, before taxes, shipping and handling.

Waiting Time to Receive Starlink Dish and Gear

For me personally, in Northern Ontario, it took just over a month to have my kit shipped out to me. I payed my deposit in July 2021, my kit was ready September 2021, and was shipped a few days after as they provided me with the tracking number.

Note that Starlink claims their processing times could potentially take up to 6 months or longer. So the sooner you sign up, the better. First come, first serve.

Starlink Unboxing – What’s Included

Included in your Starlink Kit is the dish, wi-fi router, power supply, cables, and mounting tripod.

As for the instructions, it’s a sheet with three pictures on it. You can literally set up and start using the internet right away, as long as your dish has a clear view of the sky (more on that below).

Tips For Starlink Dish Placement and Installation

You’ll get about 100 feet of cable which is great for finding the clearest view of the sky from your property in order to place the dish accordingly.

The key is to mount your dish as high as you can, with the clearest view of the sky and as few obstructions as possible.

Obstructions include trees, leaves, branches, electricity poles, cables, wiring, buildings, and posts. Try to place your dish with a clear view of the sky (use the Starlink app to help you), in both north and south directions.

How to Mount Your Starlink Satellite Dish

You are basically on your own for installation unless you hire a cable guy. The good news is that if you had internet installed prior, you can use that antenna arm to mount your dish on your rooftop. The diameter of our arm was too large to fit the satellite snuggly inside, so we added two rubber washers on the outside and finally a bolt to tighten the dish securely in place.

If you don’t have a mounting arm, which you can buy on Amazon here, you can use the mounting tripod that’s included and fasten it to your roof or other surface up off the ground.

Hardware is not provided so you’ll need to purchase some regular screws and washers that specifically fit the diameters of the tripod’s mounting holes.

Many of the mounting accessories can be found in Starlink’s Shop when you log in to your existing Starlink account on the app or on a web browser. Keep in mind that mounting supplies can actually be purchased for much cheaper on Amazon, like this 3-foot mounting tripod which will get your dish much higher off the ground than the tripod your dish will come with.

If you’re just using the given tripod, try to mount it on a table at least, so that snow doesn’t build up around it.

The dish itself has a snow and ice melting feature due to the heat that it emits.

Routing Your Dish Cable

After your dish has been mounted, you’ll unravel the cable that’s connected to the dish, drill a hole into your house using a cordless drill, or route the cable into an existing hole or vent. Pull the cable through, and plug it in wherever you’re setting up the included router. Then, be sure to seal the hole going into your home with some silicone caulking or some butyl sealing tape to stop any bugs or rodents from getting through.

You do have the option to use another router with Starlink as the connections are all standard.

Keep in mind that your Starlink kit includes a 100-foot power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable. If you need extra to get your dish installed at a further distance, you may want to purchase heavy duty extension cable with a male and female end.

Starlink Installation Help

To see how others have been installing their Starlink dishes, or for quick questions, join a Starlink Facebook Group in your region that will be full of users all supporting each other and helping with installation tips and usage.

Starlink Speed Test in Northern Ontario Canada

So far, we’ve tested up to 150 Mbps download speed, which is incredible to say the least. We went from a measly 12 mbps internet plan, had searched far and wide for the best providers here in the north, and none were able to service our small-town area.

We simply could not get high speed internet at our location. Not to throw other service providers under the bus, but in the past we have tried Norhterntel, Xplornet, and we were not able to get fast speeds due to trees blocking our view of their towers and not having access to FibreOp in our area, as most people in rural areas experience.

When all else failed, Starlink was the way to go and we are beyond pleased with the new technology. Probably one of the best decisions we’ve ever made, coming from a work-from-home mom! We have multiple devices streaming at once, quick download and upload speeds, no more buffering on Netflix, quick loading times on the web and online editing softwares, and so much more. There’s no looking back!

What To Expect From Starlink Downtimes

During the set-up process, the Starlink App will inform you of your obstructions and the downtime you can expect from it.

During inspection of the best location to install our dish on our property, the app notified us of a 2 minute obstruction warning. At first, we thought that the internet would be down for two minutes of every hour of the day. But that simply isn’t the case for us (read below).

1-Month Update After Using Starlink

After using the internet for over a month, we have the occasional outage that lasts for 2 minutes or less. The outage is so brief that it is just a breath of fresh air from whatever we were doing. If we were in the middle of a movie, streaming is not affected. If i was loading a browser, however, I would notice the downtime. The frequency of these downtimes are seldom and lasting for less than 2 minutes.

Mind you, that is with our field of view from our dish to the sky, with slight overlapping of our treetops into the dish’s point of view. What you can expect is; more downtime if you have more obstructions. That is why a clear view of the sky is best. Ideally, you would want little to no obstructions at all.

Starlink Beta Testing Is Over

As of October 2021, Starlink Beta testing is officially over. The reach of the program will now be global by using the expanding network of satellites (aimed to reach a count of 4,200 in the future). A must have for those residing in remote areas.

The more satellites that are launched, the less downtime we will experience as users.

The beta testing lasted for only one year, garnering 500,000 customers.

Distance Capability Within The Same Cell As Home Address

If you want to take your dish and install it on a differently property other than your home address, like at a cottage, RV site, camping site, etc., then you will either need to change the address on your Starlink account, or try to test out the connectivity by installing it there first.

If the distance of your second location is close enough to your home address, A.K.A within the same “cell” of internet usage in the sky, you may be able to continue using the internet at that second location. For example, camping a kilometre away from your house.

I have yet to try this and will keep you updated here! In the meantime, read this post on 50 Family Camping Must-Haves for an RV Trailer or Camper.

Weather Durability

For us, heavy rain did not affect our speeds or connectivity. As for snow, the satellite dish has a warming feature that melts snow and ice off from the heat that it emits. Just be sure to place it in a high and dry area like on a table, platform, deck, railing, roof, etc. If placed on the ground, snow and ice can easily build up around it.

If you have a metal roof, try to mount the dish on the side of your house instead, away from any avalanche that your roof may produce that could reck the dish.

Starlink Satellite Internet FAQS

What Is Starlink’s Maximum Speeds?

With not even a branch in the dish’s view of site, Starlink promises speeds of up to 150 mbps download speed and 20 mbps upload speed.

Why is Starlink Dish Called Dishy?

It’s a nickname. Starlink’s satellite dish also goes by Dishy McFlatface and UFO on a stick.

Can You Travel With Dishy?

No. Once you sign up for a Starlink account, the address you use is the address the dish should be installed and used at. Within that cell in the sky, you may be able to move it around to different places close by, but you can’t take it very far away.

If outside of your assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet.

Can You Go Camping With Starlink?

As mentioned above, your internet connection won’t work unless you stay within your cell. If you are camping close to home, it may work! Again, be sure to set-up where the line of site to the sky is clear in all directions.

What If I Have Obstructions?

If you have tall, mature trees around your property, you can expect delays. These delays usually last a few seconds if you mostly have a clear view of the sky with some of the tips of your trees entering into the range-of-view. If say, you have tall trees hovering over closer to your residence, cabin, cottage, etc. disrupting the view of the sky from the dish (the Starlink app will help you navigate the best spot for installation), you may want to raise the dish as high as possible to get the best view of the sky. An outage would last much longer. You may need a pole or stand to mount your dish very high up. You could place it on the top of your RV, on top of a tree house, on top of a garage, etc.

For us, we went with on top of our roof, which has the best view of the sky with the least amount of obstructions nearby. Occasionally, we experience delays that last for a few seconds and they’re not noticeable one bit, coming from someone constantly working from home on the computer.

Can I Leave The Router Outside or in a Garage or Shed All Winter Long?

The Starlink router, or any router you use (any router should be compatible) will not be waterproof. If you must keep it outdoors, you would need to secure it in a Nema Box which is essentially an outdoor, waterproof, dust-proof, electrical junction box. They work well in a temperature controlled environment, potentially overheating in the summer.

Do I Need To Be Close To The Router?

The range of wifi from the Starlink router is “not that great”, said in reddit forums. It tends to kick out outside of 2000 square feet. However, you may use your own router for better range and coverage. Here are some recommended alternatives:

How Big Is The Dish?

The Starlink dish is 59 centimetres or 23 inches in diameter

Is Starlink Faster Than 5G?

We definitely considered using our phones as a hotspot for fast and reliable internet. It would work, only temporarily, as you would have to keep turning on the hotspot setting in order for other devices in your home to connect.

Starlink internet is simply unbeatable. The reason is that Starlink’s satellites are orbiting the Earth much closer (lower) than a geostationary satellite. Since the internet travels at a much shorter distance, the latency of Starlink internet is in a 20 millisecond range. Other internet providers and competitors simply cannot beat this speed.

Is Starlink Unlimited Internet?

Starlink promises their customers speeds of 50-150 mbps and that includes unlimited data. There is no max or cap to your Starlink Internet usage.

Conclusion

First of all, thank you for reading! I truly hope this is an informative post for many. Feel free to bookmark this page to look back on whenever questions arise.

All in all, we are very pleased with the efficiency and reliability that Starlink provides. Whether you are working from home, homeschooling, streaming, gaming, uploading, editing, or zoom-calling, Starlink is hands down the best choice. We have multiple devices connected at once, with many programs running in the background, fyi.

It’s 2021. This is it baby, this is modern technology at its finest.

If you need high speed internet in a rural area, this is it.

My best advice to you, to get the most out of your internet is that you will need a clear view of the sky with little to no obstructions in the dish’s view of sight. And even with some obstructions (not obvious ones), downtimes are typically not noticeable and rarely occur.

Starlink is definitely worth the price tag if you have a large family or you’re an entrepreneur. It will definitely be worth your hard earned money.

10-Minute Keto Pumpkin Cheesecake

My cheesecake filling is a lot thinner than most cheesecakes recipes you’d see. That’s because my hubby took the other block of cream cheese to use for a Nutella Cheesecake for our daughter’s 8th birthday, and I made the pumpkin version on the side–which was believe it or not, devoured first!

But having less filling did not change a thing. Actually, each piece of cheesecake is less net carbs than your average piece, which helps you portion control in the long run.

The best part–it only takes 10 minutes to make, no baking required.

How to Make Keto Pumpkin Cheesecake

  1. You’ll need a round pie dish, but really any small baking dish will do (mine was square!) No need to grease your dish.
  2. Get your hands on some low carb graham cracker crumb pie mix that is actually a great source of fibre. Don’t forget the grass fed butter that will hold the bottom layer of crumble in place! Press your crumb and melted butter mixture evenly on the bottom of your dish with clean hands or use the back of a spoon. Set in the fridge.
  3. Whip together your filling using a hand mixer. And whip it good. Combine room temperature cream cheese, pre whipped whipping cream, 0-calorie sweetener, pumpkin purée, and pumpkin pie spice seasoning. The fluffier, the better.
  4. Spread the filling on top of the crumble CAREFULLY. If your crumble isn’t fully set yet, use a spatula to slowly smooth out the filling. Start from the centre and work your way outwards, like a wave. Or, add more melted butter to the crumble and allow to set, to be less crumbly.
  5. Sprinkle cinnamon on top if desired, and place back into the fridge until ready to serve!

What’s In Lactation Banana Bread?

The key ingredients to boost your milk supply are the high fibre oats, flaxseed, and debittered brewer’s yeast

Remember when your mother or grandmother told you to drink a rich dark beer to get your milk flowing?

Instead of consuming alcohol — which is not safe for breastfeeding — simply bake this lactation banana bread using the brewer’s yeast powder. It’s the same ingredient in beer that works to get your milk flowing, for richer breastmilk.

You can also add in a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast into your every day green smoothie, or sprinkle on top of a bowl of oatmeal or on top of your favourite dessert. You may want to have it with something sweet, either mixed in it on top because the “debittered” aspect of it makes it taste quite bitter indeed.

How Much Can I Eat?

It is recommended to eat two slices of lactation banana bread a day.

Simply enjoy one slice for breakfast and one for dessert later on after dinner.

Can Anyone Eat Lactation Banana Bread?

All of the ingredients in this banana bread recipe are wholesome and healthy for the whole family to enjoy. So it’s okay if the kids want to try a piece, too.

The oats and flaxseed provide lots of fibre and nutrients for cleaning out the gut and providing energy.

The brewer’s yeast, which is the main ingredient for increasing milk flow, is safe for all to eat and pose many health benefits!

Note: If you have an illness like Crohn’s disease, IBS, or are sensitive to yeast, then you may want to ask your health care provider before consuming it as it could worsen symptoms.

Health Benefits of Debittered Brewer’s Yeast

  • Rich in chromium to maintain blood sugar levels
  • Contain B vitamins, essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails
  • A probiotic that aids in digestion and gut detoxification
  • Provides energy
  • Strengthens the immune system

This ingredient may cause mild side effects like gas, bloating, and headaches. Consult your health care provider first before trying, or if you experience any of these symptoms after-the-fact.

How Much More Breastmilk Will I Produce?

Every woman is different when it comes to breastfeeding. Some women produce more and some produce less.

In most cases, the lack of sleep and the high levels of stress contribute to lower milk production.

Sometimes, it simply depends on your genetics and speaking to your health care provider about medication to boost your milk supply may be most beneficial to you.

However for most women, this recipe should help. Expect to product almost half to double the amount you were producing before.

For example, if your left breast produces 1/2 an ounce and your right breast produces 1 ounce, you will likely double that to 1 ounce + 2 ounces which is a total of 3 ounces per feed. And you will build up from there.

It’s normal for one breast to produce more than the other.

How Can I tell If I’m Producing More Milk?

You will know if you are producing more breastmilk if your baby is topping up on less formula after breastfeeding, or is full after a feeding, or if you pump out your breast milk and measure it in a bottle.

Pumping to Increase Milk Supply

I use the Medela Pump In Style double electric breast pump to keep my milk up and flowing. I usually pump once in the morning and once at night. It’s most convenient for me since I am mostly at home, I’ll just plug it in and go about my day.

If you are more on the go, back to work, or travelling, go with the Medela Freestyle pump. It’s about $100 more than the Pump In Style, but it’s much more convenient being compact, lightweight, while using a rechargeable battery. That’s less chords and more freedom.

Another great option is the Willow Breast Pump which is a wearable, in-bra, double breast pump. It’s quiet and discreet, so you can literally be pumping anywhere you are without anyone knowing about it.

These are all powerful hospital-grade pumps to keep your milk flowing especially if you decide to pump exclusively to feed your baby.

Remember, the more you express, pump, or breastfeed your baby, the more milk your body will produce. The key is to empty your breasts completely to signal to your body to product more milk. That is why pumping after a feed is highly effective for boosting milk supply.

Tips For Boosting Milk Supply

  1. Consult a lactation consultant and get the perfect latch.
  2. Feed on demand. The more you feed or express, the more your body will produce.
  3. Consume more high fibre foods like oatmeal, fruits and veggies.
  4. Consume more protein like meat, eggs, nuts and seeds.
  5. Continue taking prenatal vitamins or take postnatal vitamins.
  6. Cut out sugar.
  7. Cut out caffeine.
  8. Cut out alcohol.
  9. Cut out processed foods.
  10. Drink enough water.
  11. Use a Haakaa silicone pump on one breast while you feed on the other, and vice versa.
  12. Pump your milk for 15 minutes between breastfeeding feeds, or directly after a feed, or at least morning and night.
  13. Get your partner or helper to feed baby with your previously expressed or pumped breastmilk so that Mom can get rest.
  14. Try supplementing with brewer’s yeast, fennel seed, red raspberry leaf, fennugreek, blessed thistle, Mother’s Milk Tea, and Organic Milkmaid Tea.
  15. If all else fails, consult health care provider about medicating with Domperidone.

10+ Ways to Create an Outdoor Backyard Oasis – Deck Reno Reveal

31 May 2021 at 17:13

Tips for deck or patio decor and design for the ultimate outdoor oasis! Our deck renovation before and after transformation using solid stain.

If you have the extra space, why not take advantage of it? Creating an outdoor space for lounging and relaxing is what dreams are made of right? Soak in all of the sunshine, watch the kids play in, the backyard, catch up on a good read, sip on some fine wine — now that’s what summer is all about.

Here are tips for you to turn your backyard into an outdoor oasis that you can enjoy for years to come, all summer long. From choosing the right deck stain to transform your deck, to patio furniture, design, and decor.

Solid Deck Stain

There are many ways to transform a deck using deck stain. You can either use a translucent stain, semi-transparent stain, or a solid stain (like a solid paint colour you’d use for inside your home) that doesn’t show any wood grain at all.

If you are dealing with a newly built deck that has not been stained, you would want the natural grain to show through. You also need to figure out what kind of wood you have. Whether it’s pine, spruce, or cedar, you’ll want to test out the stain on a small portion to see how the colour is absorbed before applying it to the whole entire deck.

In our case, we were working with a deck built in the nineties that already had a red solid stain all over it. We pressure washed the deck to remove as much of the red paint as possible. This only worked for the flooring, but did not remove paint from the railings. And because there were cracks in some of the wood, we decided to go for full coverage with a solid stain.

If you need to paint on top of a stain, you will need to use a solid stain to successfully cover it.

We used two cans of Olympic Summit Wood Stain and Sealant in Timberline.

Be sure to measure your square footage, accounting for any railings and outside skirting, so you have enough cans of paint for coverage. Sweep and clean with a pressure washer prior to applying, and make sure it’s a hot and sunny day for quick drying. You may also want to sand down any rough spots and ledges with an electric sander.

Solar Post Lights

To transform our nineties outdated deck, we removed the colonial style post tops and screwed on a set of 8 black solar post lights that made the railings look sleek while setting the mood at night for a more relaxing atmosphere.

We went for 4×4 inch solar post lights that have a neutral white light, and are dim enough to not attract bugs and moths (especially when you up north with a lot of forestry like us!). And if you’re really concerned about bugs, you can always go with yellow tinted lights that are meant to repel them.

Ambient Deck Lighting

If you don’t have wooden railing posts, you could add solar powered string lights or the plug in string lights to really make it cozy with vintage vibes. We have a pole for hanging laundry that we could use to mount hanging lights on, but if we didn’t have that we would have to extend one of the corner deck posts to hang lights on. Try to hang them in a zigzag pattern from your house roof to the end of your deck or under your gazebo.

Other ways of adding ambience to your deck or patio would be to include citronella candles to repel mosquitoes, LED waterproof candles and solar lanterns around furniture and seating areas. Light up pathways, walkways, and gardens with solar lights that you can easily stick into the ground.

Outdoor Sectional, Dining, and Seating

Decide of what kind of seating will be best for your family. Will you be hosting family and friends frequently? Do you prefer to eat and lounge with food and drink outside? Will you host outdoor kids birthday parties? If so, you’ll want a patio dining set with enough seating for your family, and perhaps a few extra chairs for guests.

Do you want to enjoy movie night or game night out on your deck? You may want a comfy outdoor sectional for comfort and lounging.

We have the Tofino Outdoor Sectional from Canadian Tire (similar version here at Home Depot) and I personally love to use it for working from home, enjoying a coffee outside, watching the kids play in the backyard from our deck, and kicking my feet up to relax. We also use it for movie night in conjunction with our Cinemood, projector screen, and bluetooth speaker for quality sound. You could also mount a waterproof, weatherproof outdoor TV for game nights!

An outdoor sectional is great for bringing your living room or recreation room to the outdoors. It creates the perfect extra living space for you and your family.

If you’re looking for durability, try these Adirondack Muskoka Chairs made out of high quality durable recycled plastic, with a weight capacity of 500 pounds! They are perfect for lounging and enjoying drinks in the sunshine or if you need extra seating for guests. They’re easy to wipe clean!

Leaf Blower

If you have a lot of greenery surrounding your deck or outdoor living space like we do, you may be prone to excessive amounts of seeds, pollen, and other droppings from trees.

Use a leaf blower to clean a large deck or patio area in no time instead or constantly sweeping. The leaf blower helps to clear off your outdoor furniture sets with ease.

Gazebo or Umbrella

Not only would a gazebo or umbrella provide shade for you and your family, it also allows for keeping your deck and outdoor furniture dry and clean. Our backyard faces north and doesn’t get sun all day, so we prefer to have an umbrella and Square Cast Iron Umbrella Base that we can move around our deck accordingly.

For more coverage, go with a 10 foot offset umbrella and a sand or water filled base to withstand high winds.

If you don’t like the hassle of putting your outdoor cushions in a wicker storage bin every time it rains (to prevent mildew), or propping them sideways to dry after a storm, you may want a gazebo to keep it all dry, so you can enjoy your deck rain or shine.

Since we live in Northern Ontario, we would personally go with an aluminum hardtop gazebo that does not need to be taken apart and stored away in the wintertime. It can withstand all weather types including snow, hail, and high winds. They also usually include privacy curtains, if that’s something you’re looking for, as well as netting to secure the space all around keeping insects out.

You can also use a grill gazebo hardtop to cover and protect your outdoor kitchen or BBQ area.

Outdoor Rug or Carpet

Having kids, I’m all for having an outdoor rug or carpet to keep dirt out of the house. Just like when I talked about our awning rug for our camping trailer. It’s more enjoyable to go without shoes on your deck and not have splinters in tiny feet from running around shoeless in the summertime.

I recently snagged a black and white 8×10 diamond patterned outdoor rug that goes great with our neutral sectional and umbrella.

The rug we have in front of our back door going into the house is a 3×5 ft geometric cream outdoor rug. Using this allows for shoes to be left outside, or for wiping feet before coming into the house. Cream works instead of white as you don’t see dirt!

Planters, Flowers, and Greenery

Nothing feels more like a resort than some beautiful greenery and flowers to set the scene. You can go with black plastic planters or a set of three planters to display some palm trees, ferns, or exotic flowers.

Depending on whether your have full sun on your deck or not, you may want to opt for a faux plant that can handle your specific sunlight situation. My ferns don’t do well in full sun, so I keep them in a partially shaded area, and I’ll place a artificial plant in full sun so I don’t have to worry about our plants drying out quickly.

I love placing planters at either side of our front door or back door, at the bottom of our deck steps, on either side of our outdoor sectional, beside a side table, on either side of our patio walkway, and on either side of our garage door.

Again, if you have a tall post for hanging laundry for example, you can easily hook a big beautiful pot of flowers up top to be in clear view. Mount these metal planter hooks to a post, beside your house door or garage door to hang flowers.

Propane Heater or Fire Table

The summers may be hot, but they sure are short here in the north. That’s way to soak up the outdoors as much as we can in the warmer months.

When sun goes down, we’ll resort to hanging around the campfire in our backyard. Though not everyone has a fire pit or would rather stay on their back deck in the evening for whatever reason. That’s when a propane heater comes in handy.

Alternatively, you can opt for a fire table that runs on propane to heat up your seating area. This way, you don’t have to worry about an actual fire close to your wooden deck. It’s safe to roast marshmallows while you’re cozying up on your outdoor sectional with a blanket.

Affordable Hot Tub

Father’s Day is coming up and an inflatable hot tub is the perfect gift for dad to relax on his deck or patio this summer. For more outdoor gift ideas, read the post

An inflatable hot tub is on our list to add to our deck, right in the corner where our privacy screens are. They are much more affordable than a hard hot tub, and they offer the same type of jets for relaxing after a long day. The best part is that they can be stored away in the winter or moved to different places in your yard or taken along when you go to the cottage or camping.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more, a plug-and-play hot tub is also convenient since you can literally just fill it, plug it in, and it’s ready to go. It can be more aesthetically pleasing on a deck or patio, and they offer more features like a waterfall, cupholders, and led lighting.

BBQ or Outdoor Kitchen

We love sharing recipes on the blog and that includes wholesome and healthy, homemade cooked meals. Even when it’s too hot to cook, we take out food prep outside and spend a lot of time grilling in the summer months.

A good stainless steel propane BBQ is built to last. Depending on the size of your family, consider a 4-burner for a family of four or more. If you have a small deck space, you can use a portable BBQ like a Weber Q1200 that we love to bring with us to the lake and when RV camping.

Some of my most popular recipes on the grill include Garlic Parmesan Grilled EggplantGrilled Salmon Cucumber SaladMeat and Vegetable Grilled Kabobs, and Jalapeño and Cheddar Stuffed Bacon Cheeseburgers.

Privacy Fence

We all know that the price of lumbar is through the roof at the moment, and so we opted for a metal privacy fence in the corner of our deck, where we intend to eventually put a hot tub.

We love that a metal fence can be folded and positioned for your specific needs. They can be screwed down into your deck which makes them super durable, especially during windy days. Simply remove the screws and store the fences away for the winter which will prolong the life of the fences.

If you notice any rust underneath peeling paint or where the hinges are, spray on some WD-40 to remove it.

Privacy Trees or Hedges

In addition to a privacy fence, it would be a good idea to plant some trees or hedges as early as possible. Keep in mind, hedges need more maintenance, since you need to cut them to your desired shape.

We are lucky to have beautiful pines, spruces and maples surrounding our property. But when it comes to covering a gap between you and your neighbours, fast growing evergreen conifers like black or white cedar trees will do the trick. Especially if you have a deck or patio low to the ground. If your deck is higher up, refer back to privacy fences.

Once planted, and after a year of setting in, they begin to grow rapidly — about one to two feet a year! They also grow up to 30 feet high, depending on the type of cedar you plant.

You can support your local garden centre by ordering from them. Ask for what their delivery fees are, if you want to go with a taller tree to begin with. We started with 5 foot cedars. Keep in mind, the more mature, the taller they are and the more expensive they are.

I also love the idea of planting a garden of big, beautiful sunflowers. They shoot up nice and tall which is great for added privacy, but only for a short while — towards the end of the summer.

Pregnant With Baby Number Three

Here we go. Six years later and doing it all over again with baby number three! From raising two daughters (back to back pregnancies) from the baby stage through to toddlerhood and now the big kid stage. Here I am, starting back at square one with our third! Luckily, I know our girls will be the best little helpers when it comes to helping mama with their new baby sister coming this June.

You heard that right — we are going to have three daughters!

All emotions aside, there are many things I wish I had years ago with my first two pregnancies, as well as things that I would never waste a penny on ever again. All you will need to focus on is this extensive list to help get you through your pregnancy from affordable essentials to luxury items!

Practical Pregnancy Must Haves

There are many things that I didn’t have with my first two pregnancies that I have and use now and wish I had back then.

I’m a little bit about both worlds — spending as little as possible and being super minimal when it comes to pregnancy items, as well as splurging a teeny tiny bit to feel the best you can and to treat yourself before babe arrives.

The following must haves are split into two categories — essentials and non-essential luxury items.

Pregnancy Essentials for Every Trimester

Prenatal Vitamins

https://SoulLife.com/northandwellness

I make sure that my prenatal vitamins have a high amount of iron and the recommended amount of folate. I also supplement with additional supplements like Collagen Peptides which provide protein and help with strong bones, hair, skin and nails. Every morning I’ll add a scoop of collagen to my coffee. After breakfast, I’ll take my prenatal with an Omega-3 with DHA supplement (for mind and baby’s development) which has extra Vitamin D3 in it and is essential especially if you’re pregnant during the winter months. If you are pregnant and low in iron, as your doctor advises, be sure to supplement with an over-the-counter iron supplement that is easily absorbed (you may need to spend a bit more for a good brand, just ask your pharmacist which one is best) and remember to take it a few hours apart from your prenatal so that the calcium doesn’t prevent the iron’s absorption.

SoulLife Cellenda and Rekick Supplements

https://SoulLife.com/northandwellness

Cellenda by SoulLife is a natural, organic form of vitamins and minerals that can be consumed as a prenatal and postnatal supplement. They include minerals in their natural form (not synthetic) that are required for cellular membranes, connective tissue (including muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones) and soft tissues (veins, arteries, organs, etc.) We are lacking the rich nutrient dense soils we once had, causing our fruits and vegetables to be depleted in minerals. We would need to consume 26 apples to receive the same nutrition as one apple in 1950. Mind blowing. Think of Cellenda as being an “insurance policy” for your body, and your growing baby.

For balancing hormones, regulating the thyroid gland, promoting growth, metabolism and energy, Rekick is excellent for postpartum mothers. It makes it easy to get back to optimal health, and pick you up, holistically speaking–powering the mind and body and ridding chronic illness and fatigue. It also fights obesity, heart disease, inflammation, depression, helps with joint pain, constipation, PMS, and regulating menstrual cycles. A lot of times, postpartum depression other postpartum mental illnesses are associated with a depletion of minerals and nutrients like iron and magnesium which is also associated with anxiety and brain fog or “pregnancy brain”.

Instead of taking 7-10 different supplements, you will actually garner better results with just these two combined. They are incredibly priced at $70 a bottle, but by using my link here, you will get them even cheaper!

Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.

Bio-Oil

An item that I’m using this time around to control stretch marks. With my first two pregnancies, I used Pregnancy Cocoa Butter and it didn’t work that well for me, personally. I just didn’t like the smell of the lotion. My stretch marks weren’t that bad in the end, maybe thanks to genetics, but they still ended up showing up slightly post delivery. With the Bio Oil, which is meant for ridding scars and stretch marks as well, my skin feels way more smoother and hydrated as opposed to the cocoa butter. And because my skin has already stretched from before, I’m hopeful of good results. After every shower, I apply the oil to my tummy, but you can also apply it twice daily. As beautiful and meaningful as stretch marks are in relation to motherhood and all we’ve been through growing a human, it’s also worth to mention that taking care of your skin is a form of self love and self care and will help you feel more comfortable and confident postpartum!

Water Bottle With Measurements

I carry my water bottle with me wherever I go, literally. And it’s not just like any water bottle, it’s one that has measurements imprinted on it so that you can track exactly how much water you are consuming throughout the day, which is extremely important during pregnancy. You are typically required to drink at least 90 ounces of water a day (about 10 cups of water) while pregnant. Some health care providers recommend intaking up to 100 ounces per day. There are many benefits of drinking enough water during pregnancy, although not easy for all moms due to nausea and other common pregnancy symptoms, however it will help to bring down swelling and bloating, promote healthy weight management, and help with a smoother labour and delivery in the end.

U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillow

I’ve never owned a pregnancy pillow before, but now that I’m using one this time around, it really helps to support my baby bump and my back. I have this U shaped pregnancy pillow and I highly recommend it to help relieve lower back pain. They say your bump is bigger or more prominent with each pregnancy, which contributes to back pain. Either that or it’s all because I’ve hit the 30 mark. Regardless, it really does makes sleep that much better at night, especially if you suffer from pregnancy insomnia, or if you just can never get comfortable at night in bed, providing you an all-around cushion experience.

My Go-To Non-Maternity Maternity Leggings

OFFLINE Real Me High Waisted Legging

I find that many maternity leggings are either cheaply made, or way too expensive and aren’t even that comfortable. My go-to leggings this pregnancy happen to be not maternity wear, and work above and beyond anything you’ve ever imagined. Aerie’s Offline Real Me High Waisted Leggings are super stretchy and buttery soft. You can wear them before and after pregnancy. Believe all those reviews! They make for perfect loungewear and they hold up amazingly during prenatal yoga and general exercise. I wore mine before pregnancy and now that I’m in the third trimester, I continue to wear them on my every day walks. Believe me, the high waist provides the perfect amount of pregnancy support with lots of give to them.

Maternity Nursing Tank

BRAVADO! DESIGNS Women's Seamless Classic Nursing Cami | Maternity Tank for Breastfeeding | S - XXL : Amazon.ca: Clothing, Shoes & AccessoriesBRAVADO! DESIGNS Women's Seamless Classic Nursing Cami | Maternity Tank for Breastfeeding | S - XXL

I have the Bravado Nursing Tank that I’ve been wearing from my second trimester all the way to my third trimester. It has very flattering, stretchy material that is long enough for a full pregnant belly, as well as for its convenient nursing capabilities for postpartum. With functioning clips at the straps for one-handed nursing, I can’t wait to live in these tanks when baby is here in the summertime. You can easily dress them up with a cozy cardigan on colder days and again, comfort is king when you don’t have to wear a bra and spend all your time with your little darling staying comfortable and cozy. Did I mention the built in bra? I have their white and black maternity nursing tanks.

Maternity Nursing Bra

Forget about those bra extenders you will never use. Get some comfortable, stretchy, buttery soft, wire free nursing bras to wear throughout your pregnancy and postpartum. Comfort is key. I only had one good nursing bra with my first two pregnancies and this time, I bought about four. I have the Bravado Plunge Nursing Bra which is so sexy and flattering and comfortable all around, the Bravado Ballet Nursing Bra which is super soft and perfect for sleeping with amazing stretch and no clips involved, and the Body Silk Nursing Bra which I personally think is like the perfect stretchy sports bra for everyday use and has full coverage.

Comfortable Sandal Slides

Cape Robbin Boo Furry Faux Fur Slides Slippers for Women, Fluffy Slippers

I don’t think any pregnant lady wants to be bending over tying laces or struggling to do up a buckle. We’re easily out of breath speaking a sentence as it is! Slip-on slides are my go-to while being a mom of two kids, during this third pregnancy, and will be all I succumb to postpartum. I find slides to be convenient to have and are definitely affordable for moms-to-be. I love these fur slides on Amazon that are under $20 and I currently own a pair of Adidas Adilette Slides which are highly cushiony, sporty and perfect for summer. Although, I typically wear them almost all year around.

Ginger Candies for Nausea

I wish I had these for all of my pregnancies. I usually experience moderate nausea in all of my first trimesters, luckily no throwing up involved this time around, but the usual heightened senses and extreme nauseousness that seemed like would never subside. Thankfully, it did subside, though not the case for all women. Some experience severe morning sickness either short-term or throughout their entire pregnancy — I feel for you mama. In my case, I would suck on regular mints and mint flavoured Tic Tacs to sooth my nausea. I kept a pack in my car, in my purse, and pretty much everywhere in the house. I also put a pinch of ground ginger in my tea every night up until the second trimester which did wonders for me. But let’s be real, the taste of ginger isn’t the best, so why not order these ginger morning sickness candies that will help ease the pain? Moms-to-be are raving about them and they’re made with organic cane sugar!

Pregnancy Teas

Believe it or not, raspberry red leaf tea isn’t only meant for the third trimester. It can be consumed throughout your entire pregnancy in moderate amounts to help strengthen the uterus for a quicker labour and delivery. Drink one cup a day in early pregnancy and up to three cups a day in the third trimester. As for chamomile tea, it has soothing and calming effects. This naturally caffeine free tea is great before bed for a better night’s rest, or when you are feeling ill or anxious. It provides antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which is why it should only be consumed in small amounts (just like these powerful herbs and spices), and not enough studies have been done to ensure its safety during pregnancy. (Source)

If you are not a fan of tea, take all of your nutrients for relaxation in supplement form (Cellenda)

Buttery Soft Robe for Maternity and Nursing

A soft, lightweight robe is convenient to have throughout pregnancy and into postpartum during breastfeeding. Let’s put it this way — if your clothes don’t fit anymore, throw on a comfy sports bra or no bra at all and a robe on top to go on about your day lounging at home in comfort! I absolutely love my buttery soft robe in the third trimester. Forget about pyjamas, you’ll want to live in these robes all day long and pack in your hospital bag for the big day.

Loose Fitting Lounge Pants

PinkBlush Taupe Leopard Print Maternity Lounge Pants

My calves and thighs seem to be super swollen in this third pregnancy, which I never had with my others. Sometimes it’s so nice to take a break from leggings by wearing loose fitting pants. I purchased these adorable leopard lounge pants from Blush Maternity in my second trimester and I’m obsessed with them. They are so light and breathable, they do not restrict your belly once so ever. The best part is that they can be worn as pyjamas or throughout the day with a stretchy tank or pullover sweater. You can shop my maternity style ideas here.

Compression Socks

Referring once again to swelling, it’s a very common pregnancy symptom which is totally normal to experience. Of course, you can try to limit your salt intake as much as possible and drink those 90 ounces of water a day if you can. And if you still happen to experience swollen ankles or calves and aching feet (75% of pregnant women do), then compression socks may be for you. It is recommended to wear them first thing in the morning as they help to massage your muscles and boost circulation to relieve the swelling. Try to wear them when you’re walking, standing, or sitting. There’s no need to wear them when your feet are elevated like when sleeping or relaxing.

Arm or Wrist Brace

I never knew that carpel tunnel syndrome was such a common pregnancy symptom until I came to experience it head on with my third pregnancy. Turns out, if you sleep on your arm bent at the elbow, or spend too much time typing at a computer or holding your phone, you can develop it. More so during pregnancy. To relieve any tingling or numbness in your arm, hand, or fingers, you may want to keep your arms and wrists straight as much as you can. Although, not so easy to do when you’re tossing and turning at night, you may want to try wearing an arm brace to keep your arm and elbow straight to promote circulation. Or alternatively, wear a wrist brace to keep your wrists in proper form while typing at a computer.

High Waisted Underwear

Cotton underwear is specifically light and breathable allowing maximum airflow. During pregnancy, our hormones go crazy and women become prone to infections down there which is why cotton is a must have to keep things dry rather than tight and moisture-collecting. The looser the fit, the better, like pyjamas. Comfort is key! High waisted underwear provide maximum support for that growing pregnant belly, as long as it has a stretchy band, which most cotton underwear do have (thong version here). They will most definitely come in handy for recovery post labour as well. You can worry about a postpartum tummy band for after delivery to help suck everything back into place and build back your core muscles later on.

Relief for Heartburn and Acid Reflux

I’ve never experienced heartburn until my third pregnancy, and boy oh boy, it’s rough in the third trimester! What helps for me is taking heartburn tea and Tums — the recommended dosage after every meal or to a maximum of five a day. As common as it is, try to eat smaller meals more often and keep track of the foods that cause your flareup like coffee, chocolate, tomato sauce, or hot sauce and limit them. Yes, even drinking water would cause heartburn for me. Ouch. I literally have to lay down after meals and hope that it would go away. When you’re at the point of maxing out the over-the-counter Tums or Gaviscon, just get your hands on a prescription from your OB-GYN. Don’t worry, whatever they prescribe will be pregnancy safe and much more effective.

Non-Essential Luxury Pregnancy Items

On Trend Slippers

I love these pink fluffy slippers I bought off Amazon that make for a cute Instagram picture. They are super comfortable for wearing around the house and for lounging in while pregnant to postpartum and nursing. They have rubber soles on the bottoms, making them outdoor friendly and perfect for wearing at the hospital. Throw them in the wash when you get back home!

Maternity Belly Band

If you want to stick to leggings and jeans for as long as possible, you can add a maternity belly band to support the bottom of your belly as opposed to high waisted maternity pants. It just adds that extra comfort, instead of say, pants rolling down from a growing pregnant belly! They have many benefits as well, like helping to improve posture and easing lower back pain. Blanqi has an awesome full belly band for even more all around support.

Blanqi Shapewear

Easy to style and super popular on social media, these leggings (or shorts for the summer months) provide extensive support all the way up to your ribs. With an expandable tummy section for your growing belly, they are tight in the legs to help hold everything in except for the belly section, in turn making them very flattering and form fitting.

Yeti Insulated Travel Mug

If you prefer your water ice cold like the ice queen princess that you are, invest in a quality Yeti travel mug to use in the hospital and everywhere else on the go. They hold ice for a super long time, which would come in handy for labour and delivery — as munching on ice tends to help with distraction from contractions. They’re great for cold or hot beverages and are built to last.

Fetal Dopler

A baby heart monitor known as a doppler can be great reassurance — in the comfort of your own home — that baby is alive and well. This can come in handy if you’re nervous about your baby’s activity levels in the womb, if you are not able to track the amount of kicks, or just for peace of mind that everything’s okay.

Leather Diaper Bag or Hospital Bag

I’ll never forget my very first diaper bag when Brooke was born. It was a gorgeous leather over-the-shoulder bag from Storksak that had functional compartments for bottles, soothers, diapers and wipes. For your hospital stay, try this Weekender Bag by Fawn Design which is perfect for packing for mom and babe (and dad too!). Stylish for any outing and functional for those weekend trips to grandma’s house. Plus, they’re easy to wipe clean!

Maternity Jeans

Maternity Full Panel O.G. Straight Dark-Wash Jeans for Women

To be honest, the third time around for me consists mostly of comfy leggings and loungewear because I’ve got online learning with two older kids and I get to work from home in my pyjamas. So, hey, there’s that. But when I was pregnant way back when, when things were normal before the pandemic and we got to dress up and go out, I had the luxury of wearing maternity jeans! It just makes styling that baby bump easier, in turn making you feel better about yourself too. I always wore maternity jeans with the full panel for support, not the ones with an inset panel on each side of the hips. Just preference.

Epson Salts

Not every mama-to-be has time for “me time” or spa time in the bathroom, alone, away from their kids. And if you do, take advantage of it! Soak in that tub with warm water and some eucalyptus epson salts for maximum relaxation and relief from aches and pains associated with pregnancy. This will help you to practice calmness and breathing in preparation for labour, to rid any anxiety you may have.

Essential Oils

This falls into the category of an all-natural luxury item because let’s face it, essential oils ain’t cheap. Although, women and moms-to-be swear by using them to relieve many pregnancy symptoms as long as they’re used safely and properly. Use rose oil, lavender oil, geranium oil, or chamomile oil to calm down, relax and ease anxiety. Peppermint oil or lemon oil will help reduce nausea. Use an essential oil diffuser in your home to help relieve any of these symptoms.

Rubber Wedding Ring Replacement

With pregnancy comes swelling, a common symptom for many women which includes your fingers. If you notice your fingers swelling and your wedding ring getting too tight or hard to take off, you’ll want to remove it right away! Replace it with a rubber wedding ring in the meantime, or until swelling goes down. Usually after baby is born swelling should subside, or a few months into postpartum or after nursing.

Foot Spa for Sore Swollen Feet

If you can get your hands on a foot spa, soak those precious sore and swollen feet for great relief and relaxation time. This is great if you’re on your feet for long hours of the day or if you experience swollen feet in general. You can fill up the spa with water, adjust the temperature and add in those epson salts that I mentioned earlier, or a few drops of essential oils. Then, squeeze in as many foot massages as you can before the big day, mama!

Heating Pad for a Sore Back

If your belly band and pregnancy pillow isn’t providing you with enough back support to relieve back pain, you may find that a heating pad would help to ease the pain the most. Apply the pad directly to the painful area by holding it in place while sitting or laying down and resting. Always confront your health care provider if you have serious back pain concerns.

Bubly Carbonated Sparking Water

bubly Sparkling Water, Raspberry, 12 oz Cans, 8 count

If you have trouble cutting out soda cravings, try flavoured sparkling water with 0 calories and 0 sugars. I find carbonated water helps with nausea, and also simulates a sugary treat when really, it’s just water. So while hubby gets to sip on his favourite beer or beverage, you get to enjoy some “bubbly” too! Great to serve at your baby shower as well. Highly recommend raspberry and blackberry!

Easter Mini Egg Nests

Making these Easter egg nests will become an exciting tradition in your home year after year.

Just like making basic Rice Krispie squares, you will be moulding your batter into nests instead of squares! They’re super easy to do, and so much fun to decorate.

I happened to find these adorable spring and Easter themed sprinkles and used each kind on each egg nest. The kids love the pastel colours, and of course, the chocolate mini eggs that go on top!

Rice Krispie Egg Nests Ingredients

It only takes 5 ingredients to make the Rice Krispie Egg Nests! And you don’t need a lot.

  • Butter
  • Marshmallows (big or small, it doesn’t matter!)
  • Rice Krispies (the cereal)
  • Cadbury Chocolate Mini Eggs
  • Easter Pastel Sprinkles

You’ll want to use some extra butter, margarine, or non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking when moulding the batter into a muffin tray and indenting with a spoon to form the nests.

How to Make Easter Egg Nests

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot on low/medium heat, about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Mix in the marshmallows until melted and then mix in the Rice Krispies. Remove from heat.
  3. Mould the batter into a greased muffin tray and used a greased spoon to indent the nests.
  4. Top the nests with lots of sprinkles and a some chocolate mini eggs! They’re ready to eat!

Helpful Tips

  • This recipe makes 6 large egg nests using a jumbo muffin tray. If you used a regular sized muffin tray, you could make around 8-10 nests.
  • Try to work fast to mould your nests while the Rice Krispie batter is still warm. If cooled, it hardens and become very difficult to shape.
  • When making the wells in your nests, grease the back of a spoon so that the batter doesn’t stick to it when pressing down!
  • You can use inexpensive, no-name mini eggs or other chocolate treats to top. There are also really cute pastel-coloured M&M’s!

Jalapeño and Cheddar Stuffed Bacon Cheeseburgers

Jalapeño and Cheddar Stuffed Bacon Cheeseburgers

This is a burger recipe that is packed with so much deliciousness that you can easily be fulfilled with or without a burger bun to go with it.

Stacked tall with crunchy, mouthwatering ingredients, and a flavourful, oozing surprise when you bite into the burger itself, it’s like you went to heaven and came back to tell the story.

Can you tell that this recipe description is written by a 7-month-along pregnant lady with HUGE cravings? You simply cannot go wrong with listening to a pregnant lady’s food recommendations — just saying.

Make a Healthier Hamburger

  • Make it a Lettuce Burger

We’re all watching what we eat and looking after our health (as we should be), and a great big bun sounds appetizing but doesn’t always feel great after the digestion process. Skip the guilt by replacing your hamburger bun with some crispy iceberg lettuce on the top and bottom of your burger (no nutrients here, just great texture with 0 carbs to replace bread).

  • Try a Gluten-Free, Low Carb Keto Bun Instead

Again, trying to limit the carbs here, which helps to control blood sugar levels and moods. You can buy low carb keto sesame seed hamburger buns online on amazon, or bake them yourself with a grain-free hamburger bun mix.

How to Make Jalapeño and Cheddar Stuffed Burgers

  1. Make your burger mixture. Add the beef, seasonings, egg and breadcrumbs in a large bowl and mix together by hand.
  2. Stuff your burger patties. Shape two thin burger patties by hand. On top of one patty, place stuffing ingredients in the centre (about a tablespoon of chopped jalapeños and cheddar combined). Place the second thin patty on top, molding all around the edges to form one burger.
  3. Fry or grill the burgers. On medium heat, cook the burgers for 5-6 minutes per side or until fully browned. Flip only once, halfway through to ensure the burger stays intact. Melt the cheese on top before removing!
  4. Top and serve. Use your favourite fresh veggies and condiments. Add the bacon, spread the mayo, and voila!

BBQ Grilled or Pan Fried Burgers?

Stuffed cheeseburgers are good any way they are cooked. But the question is, to pan fry them or to grill them?

If you enjoy the overall crispy outer layer on your beef burgers, then go ahead and fry them up. You don’t need any extra grease or oil if you use a quality non-stick frying pan

On the other hand, if you prefer your burgers to be well done, covered in those luscious grill marks and have that unbeatable smokey taste, go ahead and grill those babies on the barbie.

We use our new Weber Q1200 for grilling burgers when camping and we’re obsessed!

Stuffed Bacon Cheeseburger Side Dishes

We love healthy side dishes like a bunch of garlic and olive oiled green beens, sweet potato fries, or a balsamic salad.

Of course, the kids love their plain salted french fries. Hits the spot every time.

We recently bought a potato cutter off amazon to cut our own fries by hand and we have never looked back to frozen fries since.

For Stuffing:

  • 1 jalapeño thinly chopped
  • 1 oz cheddar cheese cubed

For Topping:

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine beef, seasonings, egg and breadcrumbs and knead together with clean hands. Form 4 thin hamburger patties. On two of the patties, place cubes cheddar and chopped jalapeños in the centre, place a second beef patty on top, molding the edges together to form one burger patty.
  • Pan fry or grill the burgers 5-6 minutes per side on medium heat, only flipping once. No oil needed, use a non-stick frying pan. Before removing from the pan, place Kraft single slices on the burgers for a minute or two to melt.

Notes

*Makes two gourmet burgers*
Note: Use a low carb bun, or skip the bun altogether and wrap this baby in a crunchy lettuce shell to make this low carb and keto compliant. You would also need to switch out the breadcrumbs in the beef for almond flour or pork panko crumbs.

Easter Basket Gifts for Girls

12 March 2021 at 16:56

Easter basket gifts for girls including ideas for fun and bright spring colours and warm weather essentials your daughter will love! Little girls and older girls alike.

It’s almost that time of year again! We are so excited for spring — warm weather and sunshine and all things bright and colourful. It’s been a long year and I think we all deserve some sunshine and positive spring vibes in our lives!

We enjoy Easter traditions as a family every year, including egg painting, baking, starting our indoor gardening, and our girls go crazy for their Easter basket gifts full of goodies and necessities that they need.

Easter Basket Gifts For Girls

Refraining from toys, and too much candy, I will still throw in a few mini eggs, and cute colourful hair ties, hair clips and stickers into some plastic eggs to fill the remainder of their baskets.

A good way to come up with gift ideas would be to think about what your kids need for the spring and summer months ahead. Maybe they could use new rain gear like rubber boots and a cute and functional umbrella for rainy days.

You can ask yourself, what is their favourite outdoor activity? For smaller kids, simple things like a frisbee, blowing bubbles, or a shovel and pale will do the trick.

My girls tend to outgrow their bathing suits every year so this is a perfect time to buy new swimsuits, sunglasses, hats, sandals, and all things for fun in the sun. It’s also a great idea to add in a few cute little Easter or spring themed books!

Easter Basket Gift Ideas

  1. Bathing Suit

We are loving all things tie dye! They are bright and cheerful, especially for little girls. We spend most of our days outside in the warmer months and the girls literally live in their swimsuits! I love these sweet bathing suits from Gap with the ruffled shoulders that go all the way to the criss cross back. So adorable!

  2. Headband

When I saw these adorable pink headbands with sweet little daisies on them, I had to get them. And of course, my daughters have to be matching! I find it so adorable and they love to match as well, especially being so close in age.

  3. Hair Brush

This unicorn coloured hairbrush was a Dollar Store find! It’s a super affordable gift that the girls could use and are always excited about, now that they’re brushing their hair (mostly) on their own. Here’s a similar one from Amazon, and if your child is extra sensitive to brushing, I recommend getting a Wet Brush!

  4. Jump Rope

For some reason, our previous jump ropes always seem to break somehow. Another Dollar Store find — these plastic jump ropes seem to be strong and extra long in length for older kids. Here is a similar set on Amazon.

  5. Notebook

These sweet little notebooks come in the cutest colours and glittery prints with sweet messages on the covers. My girls love new notepads, whether they take them on the bus to school to doodle, or to use as a daily journal to write in.

  6. Sunglasses

With kids, sunglasses always seem to break or scratch up easily. Hence why I don’t normally spend a lot on the girls’ sunglasses, and usually only buy them if they’re on major sale. I love these trending flower shaped sunnies!

  7. Spring Dress

The only gifts that aren’t matching in our daughters’ Easter baskets this year are these gorgeous spring dresses from Gap. They have an adorable fit and flare shape, and the ruffles and floral prints melt my heart! The prints are just the sweetest in navy and in pale pink.

  8. Sandals

This can range depending on your needs. I usually go with slip on sandals, but you can also go with ballet flats, pool sandals, or rubber boots!

  9. Lipgloss/Chapstick

My girls love lipstick and lipgloss, but towards the end of the winter our lips always get super dry and chapped. That’s why llip balm is always good idea for moisturizing. The girls can bring them to school or wherever they go, and we also love the ones made with SPF sun protection.

  10. Yoga Mat

I absolutely love this colourful rainbow yoga mat for little girls. It’s provides a stylish and soft surface for exercising and stretching. My girls are into gymnastics and we also love exercising in the living room together, so if you have an active older daughter or even toddler, I’m sure she will love this!

Lastly, if you are looking for baskets to fill, the pink ones you see here are a Walmart find from a few years back. I also love the look of farmhouse wire baskets, that come in black too. Also, even woven baskets are sweet and traditional as well and can be used for organization around the house!

Newborn Essentials

I am so excited to announce that baby number three will be arriving this June! I remember like it was yesterday when I wrote about What to Expect The Second Time Around. And now we’re doing it again with our third! It truly feels surreal.

And what’s even more exciting is the fact that it’s another girl! If you follow me on Instagram, you know how shocked I was when I found out, but ultimately so happy to have a little girl gang of three daughters!

In preparation of welcoming our little babe into our family and home, I’m doing things a little differently this time around. We live in a decent sized house where the girls share a bedroom, and our third bedroom is a guest room, office combination. And so, we’ve made the decision to co-sleep the first few months when babe is here, and worry about the nursery later on. We have a bassinet in our master which is what will be working for us in the meantime!

As for everything baby — baby products and must haves (this post included) — get ready for it!

I know these tips will be useful for you whether you’re a first time mother, looking for advice, or inspiration in general. By using few baby products in different ways, you’ll save money and sleep a little better knowing you’re prepared.

Nightingale Baby Products Available on Amazon

Nightingale is a company that designs their baby products in Canada, which I absolutely love! You can find their products on Amazon.ca (in Canada) and Amazon.com (in the US). You can also shop their products directly from their website.

They have modern designs that are simple, sweet, and minimal. I love that their beautiful prints are subtly gender neutral, just in case you are waiting to find out the gender until baby is born!

Nightingale’s blankets and washcloths for example make for the sweetest baby shower gift, especially if the baby’s gender is not announced yet.

Another reason why I love to support small businesses like Nightingale is because they have such great intentions. 1% of their sales goes to Share The Meal — a United Nations World Food Programme. How wonderful is that?!

10 Ways to Use a Muslin Swaddle Blanket

  1. Swaddle Baby After Birth

Swaddling a newborn baby is something that takes practice, but can be very beneficial for mom and dad. Swaddling helps to calm and soothe baby, and snuggle the baby as if they are still in the womb. My favourite swaddle folds are the the basic wrap and tuck, and the wrap and knotted bottom.

  2. Nursing Cover

Tie two of the top corners of your muslin blanket together, using as little material as possible, and tying a double knot. The loop you’ve made can now go over your head, draping the front of your body as a lightweight, breathable nursing cover.

  3. Stroller Cover

Fold the muslin blanket in half and drape over the stroller starting at the top where the canopy is fully extended. If your child is older and tends to pull or kick a blanket off, you can tie the top two corners of the blanket onto the sides of the stroller handlebar.

  4. Car Seat Cover

You can fold the blanket twice, once lengthways and once sideways, and use that to hang from the canopy down to the bottom of the front of the car seat for full coverage. Optionally, make some slack in the blanket to garner enough material to tie each of the top corners to the car seat handle. This allows a gap of airflow while also peace of mind that the cover will stay in place.

  5. Lounger Cover

You may have an infant lounger like the Snuggle Me Organic Lounger, which is great for hugging baby just right during supervised nap times or tummy times. Spit ups happen. Accidents happen. And especially if you didn’t spend the extra money on a lounger cover, a swaddle blanket comes in handy as an extra layer of protection, plus a gorgeous backdrop for photos as well!

  6. Change Pad Cover

Saving money in all aspects here — a swaddle blanket is perfect for wrapping a plastic waterproof changing pad, which can be much more aesthetically pleasing in babe’s nursery, as well as being soft and comfortable for them to lay on while having their diaper changed.

  7. Spit Up Cloth

When burping your baby on your shoulder in an upright position, simply layer a folded muslin blanket over the shoulder you’ll be using. This will give you an extra layer of protection to protect your clothes from soiling. Use the blanket to wipe baby’s mouth or for any extra mess that needs a quick cleaning.

  8. Receiving Blanket for Older Babies

Muslim swaddle blankets are usually large in size. They make for perfect lightweight blankets for older babies while travelling in the car seat or in the stroller. They are also great for cuddling at home, and may be one that will be hard to give up as your little one gets older. My daughters still play with their swaddle blankets with their dolls!

  9. Tummy Time Blanket

We all know how cumbersome it can be to get rid of stains on carpets. And when it comes to tummy time, we want to place our babies on a soft surface on the ground. To prevent stains, simply fold a swaddle blanket in half and place it down on the floor with baby on top to do their thing! It’s great for absorbing teething drool too!

  10. Photography Backdrop

Muslin blankets like Nightingale’s come in absolutely gorgeous patterns and colours these days. Much of which are trending on social media and match our home decor more than ever before. They are perfect for lying baby on top of with their cutest outfit, or for those monthly milestone shots.

Muslin Swaddling Blanket FAQS

Can I use a Stuffed Animal Beside My Sleeping or Swaddled Baby?

Stuffed animals and toys should only be used for decoration purposes only. Once baby is in their sleeping area (crib, bassinet, etc), and whether they are swaddled or not, all blankets, pillows, toys, and stuffed animals should be removed. This allows for proper airflow, to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Can I Use a Muslin Swaddle Blanket as a Bassinet Sheet?

Bassinet and playpen companies recommend always using their brand of bassinet sheets that are custom fit to their product. If you decide to use a muslin blanket as a sheet, make sure it is secured on the back side of the bassinet mattress, and that baby is supervised while sleeping to reduce the risk of SIDS or suffocation.

Can I Use a Muslin Swaddle Blanket as a Crib Sheet?

A muslin blanket would not be nearly large enough to wrap over a crib mattress and safely secured underneath with an elastic band. While baby is sleeping, the blanket could bunch up and cause suffocation. Read more about the risks of SIDS here

Is a Muslin Blanket Safe to Use as a Breastfeeding Cover?

Yes, if used correctly. A baby’s face should never be close to, touching, or covered by a fabric. Muslin blankets are light and breathable, but should be used to cover baby only to disguise breastfeeding, in an airy environment with sufficient airflow.

How Do I Wash My Muslin Swaddle Blanket?

Since muslin blankets are either 100% cotton or made of organic bamboo fabric like the Organic Bamboo Muslin Swaddle Blankets pictured, you’ll need to wash them in cold/warm water, gentle cycle and with like colours. Use a baby detergent, or one that is fragrance free if your baby has sensitive skin. Separate swaddle blankets from baby clothes that have buttons, zippers or velcro to avoid tears and snags. Avoid washing them with towels, which would cause a lint buildup on their delicate material. Avoid using fabric softener.

How Do I Get stains Out of Muslin Swaddle Blankets?

Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals. To remove stains, use Oxy Clean Stain Remover, or spot treat using a chlorine-free bleach by gently blotting the soiled area and letting sit for 5 minutes before adding it to a wash. You could also soak the blanket in warm water and a splash of non-chlorine bleach for one hour. Repeat as necessary.

Do I Have to Hang Dry Swaddle Blankets?

Remove items from your washing machine promptly. You can tumble dry the blankets on low heat in your dryer. Avoid using dryer sheets. When dry, remove promptly from the dryer to fold or roll up and store away. If you have the time, you can hang them to dry, which is my personal preference and seems to keep them smelling fresher.

Can I Iron Out Creases in a Muslin Swaddle Blanket?

Do not iron or dry clean your muslin swaddle blankets. Refer to the drying instructions above to keep the blankets soft, crease free and wrinkle free.

How do you get the most use out of your swaddle blankets? I’d love to know in the comments below!

1. Ginger

This major antioxidant has loads of capsaicin, an active component in chili peppers that speeds up metabolism and increases calorie burn. It has also been proven to increase feelings of fullness. Ginger is a great remedy for an upset stomach as well, or to relieve nausea.

Ginger is one of the spices for weight loss by suppressing appetite, improving digestion, providing energy, stabilizing blood sugar, as well as reducing inflammation and relieving stress.

You can put ginger in your tea (my favourite combination is green tea with ginger, lemon, and honey), salad dressings, stir-fry sauces, and smoothies.

Recipes That Involve Ginger

I incorporate ginger into my everyday fat burning green smoothie, as well as our family favourite slow cooker butter chicken dinner.

Note: Certain herbs and spices should be limited when pregnant. Although, many pregnant women swear by using ginger to eliminate their nausea symptoms, but only in small amounts. Always consult your health provider first.

green leaves of parsley

2. Parsley

Not only is Parsley one of the most popular spices around, it can do so much more than adding colour to one of your dishes.

Parsley can be quite easy to grown in your own home or in a garden, which makes it that much easier to access and use more frequently.

It’s been proven to improve liver metabolism. Let’s not forget that our liver is the largest gland in our body, sitting next to our stomach, and is essential for digestion, metabolism and storing nutrients.

Parsley contains antioxidants to keep you youthful, has antibacterial properties, and lowers your risk of getting cancer.

Instead of feeling sluggish, incorporate this flavourful green herb into soups, dips, tomato sauces, on top of grilled fish and all kinds of meat.

Parsley controls appetite and may be more nutritional for you than kale (yes, I said it!) My favourite all-natural vitamins to take to help with gut health, thyroid health, energy, joint pain, digestion, and weight loss are SoulLife’s Rekick formula

Recipes That Involve Parsley

I love to add parsley to my Fat Burning Cabbage Soup, and in my tomato sauce like in this Slow Cooker Zucchini Lasagna.

3. Garlic

Though technically a vegetable, garlic is used widely in kitchens as an herb or spice. Coming from an Italian and Ukrainian background, garlic has been used in my family in almost every single dish. And of course, we always use a lot of it.

Garlic has been used for many generations for medicinal purposes as an anti-inflammatory, and also a natural antibiotic. With its strong aroma and versatility, it too has been proven to burn fat.

It is a natural anti-inflammatory, rids respiratory illnesses, detoxifies your body to eliminate toxins, keeps skin looking young, reduces cholesterol, and aids in digestion.

Want to add a little more garlic to your meals? Try putting a couple cloves into your green smoothie. You’ll see results.

Recipes That Involve Garlic

Many of my dinner recipes and side dishes include a lot of garlic, like my Garlic Parmesan Grilled Eggplant, and my Spinach Cream Cheese Stuffed Chicken.

rosemary

4. Rosemary

With its pine like needles and beautiful scent, this herb contains carnosic acid, an antioxidant that boosts weight loss while reducing weight gain and glucose levels in our bodies.

Researchers have also found more concentrated compounds called polyphenols and flavonoids in rosemary than any other herb. These compounds help block a type-2-diabetes enzyme, eliminating chances of developing the disease.

Rosemary is a natural immune booster and antibacterial, improves circulation in the body, detoxifies the liver, is an anti-inflammatory and promotes respiratory health, improves memory and aids in digestion.

Add rosemary to your pasta sauces, combine with olive oil and garlic for flavour, it also goes great with any egg, chicken, or lamb dishes.

Recipes That Involve Rosemary

I love to include this herb in potato dishes like my Parmesan Potato Wedges, and in our Oven Roasted Turkey Dinner.

Turmeric root and powder

5. Turmeric

Similarly to ginger, this herb is very popular in East Indian dishes. It contains a phytochemical called curcumin that counteracts any inflammation in our bodies. Our bodies then respond by becoming more receptive to a metabolism-signalling hormone called leptin-–in turn, promoting weight loss.

Being the most powerful of them all, turmeric will fight against aging, allergies, cancer, fungal infections, heart disease, mental illness, and will heal wounds, improve digestion and memory, control blood sugar, and heal the lungs.

You can incorporate turmeric in chicken dishes, meat marinades, stews, rice, milk, coffee, teas, and smoothies.

Colds and flus are the worst. Especially when finding it hard to breathe. I was 3 months pregnant with my third child and developed bronchitis–something many pregnant women can experience since our immune systems are compromised due to caring for the growing fetus inside of us. I made a chamomile tea (caffeine free), and added a dash or turmeric and ginger. It immediately cleared my airways and I was able to breath again. It also completely got rid of my cough and sore throat. Please keep in mind, these are powerful spices and are only safe in small amounts. Always consult with your healthcare provider first.

Recipes That Involve Turmeric

Some of my favourite recipes that include turmeric are my Broccoli Butter Chicken, and adding it into my daily immune boosting Green Smoothie.

bigstock-Assortment-of-chili-close-up-54000895

6. Chili Powder

A spicy seasoning that, like ginger, contains capsaicin (the heat that causes your nose to run). It also promotes blood flow throughout the body and relieves indigestion and acid reflux.

The more of this spice, the more fat burn.

According to researchers, the compounds found in chili powder boost your metabolism, naturally relieve pain, reduce inflammation, aids in digestion, promotes a healthy heart, and clears the airways.

Common in most Mexican meals, you can add it to enchiladas, burgers, many beef-based stews, a tasty bean salad, and evidently chili. And believe it or not, experts say to sprinkle it on cantaloupe (to spice up your summer).

Recipes That Involve Chili Powder

Some of my favourite recipes involving chili powder are my Cheesy Taco Chicken Casserole, Quinoa Chili, Taco Bowls, Blackened Chicken, Chicken Burritos, Burrito Bowls, and my Spicy Sausage Jambalaya.

cayenne-pepper-metabolism_1

7. Cayenne Pepper

A spice that helps with arthritis, ulcers, colds and flus. Cayenne pepper will kick your immune system into gear while fighting off germs.

Once again, it too contains capsaicin–an aspirin-like compound that thins the blood to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. It helps to burn calories while curbing your appetite at the same time, suppresses hunger, lowers blood pressure, relieves pain, and fights cancer.

Just a little bit of cayenne pepper can go a long way, and make any dish the perfect amount of hot and spicy. Add cayenne pepper to chicken, tacos, a delicious salsa, or even a scintillating Mexican-style dessert.

Recipes That Involve Cayenne Pepper

Some of my most popular recipes that contain this spice are my Taco Salad Bowls, Sausage Jambalaya, Chicken Rice and Bean Burritos, and my Blackened Chicken Avocado Salad Recipe.

8. Oregano

Oregano is known as an antibacterial agent thanks to its phytonutrients, which can protect your body from illnesses, viruses, and infections. It also contains carvacrol, which is will burn fat in the body.

If you are fighting the flu or a viral infection, for example, you can ingest a few drops of an oil of oregano tincture under the tongue to help soothe a sore throat and promote a quick recovery.

This herb in any form has a ton of antioxidants to fight against aging, and is great for promoting digestion. It’s also great for treating headaches, heart conditions, allergies, cold and flu, sinus pain, arthritis.

Incorporate oregano in your cooking by using it in pasta sauces, pizzas, meat dishes, chicken dishes, potato dishes, marinades, stuffing, and salads.

Recipes That Involve Oregano

I love using oregano in my Zucchini Lasagna, Grilled Eggplant, Turkey Soup, Dry Rub Chicken Wings, and my Chicken and Alfredo Zoodles.

black-pepper-1-2

9. Black Pepper

Easy to get your hands on and very economical. Korean researchers uncovered piperine, a pungent compound in black pepper, known for its medicinal purposes as well as blasting fat.

Basically, it helps increase nutrient absorption in the body and prohibits new fat cells from forming. And it breaks down fat cells efficiently, which is the main goal here.

Not only that, but pepper also contains antioxidants to fight aging, reduces inflammation, reduces blood sugar and cholesterol levels, fights cancer, and improves brain function and lowers depression.

By promoting intestinal health, the easiest way to aid digestion and reduce gas is shaking some ground black pepper on all of your everyday meals (black pepper steak or chicken are popular dishes). If you’re adding a pinch of salt, don’t forget to add the pepper!

Recipes That Involve Pepper

I include pepper in almost all of my recipes. Keep in mind, too much pepper can be spicy, so just add a pinch when the kids start to complain about it!

Cinnamon

10. Cinnamon

Last but definitely not least, cinnamon — a spice known to lower insulin levels after a meal, which allows fat to be burned rather than stored.

Cinnamon has powerful medicinal benefits and can be easy to incorporate into your meals and drinks.

It has antioxidants that reduce triglyceride levels, help transport glucose into cells smoothly, and thereby reduces risk of heart attack and stroke by thirty percent. The spice is great for lowering stress and blood sugar levels, keeping you youthful, and reducing inflammation.

Cinnamon is one of my favourite toppings for smoothies and desserts. You can also add cinnamon to coffee, tea, milk, yogurt, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, and fruit.

Recipes That Involve Cinnamon

Some of my favourite desserts involving cinnamon include my Cinnamon Banana BreadBlueberry Banana Cinnamon PancakesInstant Iced Coffee, Oatmeal Apple Crisp, Pumpkin Pancakes, and Carrot Cake Cookies.

The Best Kids’ Winter Snow Boots for Surviving Canadian Winters

30 October 2020 at 13:46

Here you’ll find a shopping guide of the warmest, most durable winter snow boots for kids of all ages, that will keep them warm and dry all winter long!

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience, in which I earn a commission from if you make a purchase through those links at no extra cost to you.

Surviving Canadian Winters and Northern Temps

Is it just me or does each winter seem like it gets colder and longer every year?

Living in northern Ontario, we know what cold Canadian winters are all about. Heck, it snows here before Halloween and fall always seems to end way too soon.

That means, shopping for snow suits, snow boots, gloves, hats and scarves as early as possible is a must to prepare for the winter months ahead.

Related: Winter Boots for Surviving Canadian Winters – Women’s Fashion

And not only do I love cute fashion for kids, but I also always take into account functionality and durability especially when it comes to snow boots for keeping little toes warm and toasty.

Here are the best boots for kids with a warmth rating of at least -30 degrees Celsius (some rating to -60!), and with thick, long-lasting insulation, waterproof protection, and of course overall style and comfort in mind.

Tips For Buying Kids’ Winter Snow Boots

  • It’s best to size up in snow boots. More room in the boots means room for warm air to circulate, more room to wiggle toes, and more room for extra thick winter socks.
  • Be sure to measure your child’s foot and check the size guide or size chart on the brand’s website. If your child measures into a size 1 boot, you’ll want to purchase a size 2 instead.
  • Keep in mind that brands of boots will fit differently, as each brand could have entirely different size guides. Keep a note of your child’s foot measurement to check every size chart. Read reviews to see if the boots are true to size, if they run small, or run big.
  • Go with the boot that has a removable inner lining. This makes it easy to remove, wash, and dry the liner, in between outdoor play and school days.
  • Always check the temperature rating of the boot, in which is usually stated in the item description online, or on the tag in store. If it is not specified, contact the company directly to ask.
  • If you live in the city, you may be alright settling on a boot that’s -25° C rated like these Dream Pairs boots on Amazon. In more severe, northern temps, you’ll want at least a -30° C to -60° C rating.

The Best, Warmest Winter Snow Boots For Kids

  1. Baffin Snow Boots

    Temperature Rating: -40° C/F
Baffin Girl's Avery Waterproof Winter Boot White 1 Medium US

  2. Kamik Winter Boots

We especially appreciate the fact that they are made in Canada, with domestic and imported materials. these boots have lightweight rubber waterproof bottoms so they’re ideal for making snow angels. Plus, NiteRays reflective patches add to their safety when they’re up late.
  3. BOGS Snow Boots

  5. Keen Kids Lumi Boots

    Temperature Rating: -40° C/F

I can’t say enough good things about removable felt liners! They make life so much easier when it comes to quick washing and drying to use the boots again and again. These Keen Lumi Boots have all the functions a good winter boot should have, with a great temperature rating made for Canadian winters.

The slip-on, tall snow boots are constructed with an adjustable hook-and-loop strap, toggle closure at the collar, and a removable KEEN.WARM liner. Designed with a cushioned footbed and a non-marking rubber outsole.
  6. Ripzone Snowden Winter Boots

    Temperature Rating: -30 to -40° C

At only $69.99, these boots are cute, functional, and extremely affordable for parents. If your kids are as active as ours, sometimes it’s better to spend less on outdoor gear that comes and goes so quickly.

The Ripzone Snowden boots are the perfect choice to keep your child’s feet nice and toasty when the weather gets chilly outside. For a fast and secure fit, there is a bungee quick lace closure, so you don’t ever have to worry about your child’s boots coming loose. The outer shell of the boot is waterproof, so no matter how wet the weather gets, your child will be able to stay dry and cozy all throughout the day.
  7. Columbia Winter Boots

    Temperature Rating: -40° C/F

Similarly to Sorel boots, when shopping for Columbia boots make sure to check the temperature ratings for the many different styles of boots. Some boots are only rated for -25° C. Otherwise, we love the Big Kids Bugaboot by Columbia because it has an extra thick inner lining with 400g insulation.

Healthy Thanksgiving Dessert Recipe

All the flavours of fall and of course, that scrumptious pumpkin spice seasoning. All made with almond flour and a sugar-free sweetener, making it low carb and keto friendly.

You’ll never have to cut out pumpkin pie when you’re dieting, ever again.

This recipe involves only a few steps. It’s great for the whole family to enjoy and devour this Thanksgiving, without all of those sugars and carbs.

It tastes just as good and sweet as the real thing.

How to Make Keto Pumpkin Pie

Just like making a cake, you’ll need to mix the dry ingredients in one bowl, and wet ingredients in another.

Then, combine the two bowls to make your keto pumpkin pie batter.

Use a hand mixer for a nice and smooth batter.

Make sure to coat a round baking dish with some margarine, butter, or non-stick cooking spray.

Using a rubber scraper spatula to pour all of the batter into the baking dish, spreading evenly.

Bake at 350 degrees ferenheit for 35-40 minutes, or until the toothpick comes out clean.

Sugar-Free Cream Cheese Frosting

Cream cheese frosting is low carb and keto friendly, so long you use your favourite 0-calorie sweetener like stevia, monk fruit, or erythritol.

You’ll also need a teaspoon of vanilla and some heavy cream. Whip it all together with a hand mixer until you get a light and fluffy frosting.

The bit of heavy cream will make it extra fluffy.

Make sure to let your pumpkin pie cool completely before spreading on your frosting.

I even went so far as to adding excessive sprinkles of cinnamon on top of the frosting. And, wow. Just, wow.

Turn It Into a Pumpkin Pie Cake!

Once your pie is frosted and sliced, place one slice on a plate and place another slice right on top of that slice.

This makes it into an extra thick slice of pumpkin goodness, like a big piece of cake with cream cheese right smack in the the middle of it.

The Best Comfort Food Potato Wedges

Usually I refrain from high carb foods for weight loss — but sometimes, you just have to enjoy yourself!

All the carbs, all the goodness, and all the right seasonings to enjoy for any occasion.

These are the best potato wedges for a reason. They’re perfectly soft on the inside and crispy and crunchy on the outside.

Just like my breakfast potato hash, these potato wedges hit the spot as a side dish for dinner, lunch, or snack time. Even for the big game.

A Gluten-Free Potato Side Dish or Appetizer

This recipes calls for mouthwatering seasonings and a heck of a lot of parmesan. Are you drooling yet?!

The potato wedges are crispy as can be with a thick coating that doesn’t involve gluten, grains, or any breading at all. This complies with those with celiac disease, refraining from eating gluten.

Surprisingly enough, potatoes are way underrated when it comes to nutrition.

Aside from the high carb content, potatoes contain some protein and fibre, as well as vitamin c, vitamin b6, potassium and manganese.

And, potatoes are cheap. If you are looking for a budget friendly family dish, this is it.

Do I Keep The Potato Skin on?

The secret to the best ever potato wedges you’ll ever make in your life is by freshly cutting your potatoes with the skin on.

This will add texture and crunch to your wedges and also adds all of the nutrients to your dish (as they reside in the skin itself).

If you have picky eaters in the house, you can always peel the skin off of each potato, but of course will be time consuming and in turn won’t turn out as crispy.

How to Cut Potato Wedges

Wedges are very easy to cut, especially when you keep the skin on your potatoes.

Wash your potatoes well, making sure to scrub the dirt off. Pat the potatoes dry with a towel and place them on a cutting board.

Use a large, sharp knife and cut each potato in half. Turn the halves down and cut into halves. Repeat and cut into halves again. You will get 1-inch thick wedges.

Prep time made easy!

Fresh Cut Wedges VS Store Bought Wedges

Here’s the deal. Homemade is always the way to go. When you buy frozen cut potatoes from the store, you’re also buying additives such as oils and trans fats and other fillers. The potatoes are usually pre-cooked with all of those not-so-good fats.

When you make fresh cut potato wedges homemade, you are the one who controls the ingredients.

Oven-baking your wedges using olive oil is a much healthier means of cooking them rather than the store bought kinds which are deep fried in unhealthy oils.

50 Camping Must-Haves for an RV Trailer or Camper

  1. RV Wheel Chocks

When setting up your camping trailer, make sure it’s on a level lot or ground. These RV wheel chocks are great for securing your camper in place, preventing the wheels from rolling especially if you’re parked on uneven ground.

  2. RV Wheel Covers

We use our wheel covers any chance we get, even while camping. As long as your camper is parked, they protect your RV’s wheels from sun damage, dirt, rust, and corrosion.

  3.  RV Levelers

Again, if you’re parking your camper on uneven ground, these Lynx Levelers are great for raising any side of your trailer to level it out perfectly. They’re super lightweight and easy to bring along. Use a magnetic level measuring tool for complete accuracy. When your camper is level, it will have a much more stable, comfortable feel.

  4. Impact Drill

Bring a drill with you for setting up your camper with ease. We use our DeWalt Impact Drill, along with a socket drill adaptor to adjust the scissor jacks of our camper. This is a must for correctly levelling your camper.

  5. Levelling Scissor Jack Socket Drill Adaptor

When you are lifting the levelling jacks underneath your trailer, a socket drill adaptor can be placed on your drill to lift your levelling jacks up and down with ease.

  6. Power Extension Cord

You can always reach where the hookup is for your hydro with an extension cord. Remember to purchase one that your RV camper is compatible with (20 amp, 30 amp, 50 amp etc). Always have an extra one on hand if the hookup is even further away, to set up with ease.

  7. Amp Adaptor Cord

You will need an adaptor cord if your camper is a 30 amp and you are hooking up to a 50 amp power connection. It will convert the power source to what your specific camper needs.

  8. Power Adaptor for 15 amp

If you are connecting your camper to a home outlet, you’ll need a power adaptor to convert the power source to a 15 amp.

  9. BPA Free Fresh Water Hose

In order to connect fresh water to your camper safely, you’ll need a special kind of hose called a fresh water hose. This is the only hose you can use for fresh drinking water and is BPA free, toxin free.

  10. Pressure Regulator Valve

To lower the pressure of city water, a regulator valve will keep your pipes from bursting by limiting the pressure from the fresh water hose. This will keep your mind at ease when your fresh water is connected to your camping trailer.

  11. Hose Splitter

If camping beside friends and family whom have their own camper, and there is only one water hookup, a hose splitter will come in hand for allowing multiple connections.

  12. 20′ Sewer Hose

Camco 39611 39611 Durable High Tensile Strength Sewer Steel Wire Core, 20' Hose with 12 mils of HTS Vinyl, Black
This 20 ft sewer hose will allow you to drain your black water tanks when you’re done camping or when your tanks are full. If you’re camping for long periods, it’s a good idea to leave the sewer hose hooked up permanently for constant drainage.

  13. Sidewinder Sewer Hose Support

An extensive list of everything you'll need, gear, and necessities for setup and camping in an RV trailer or camper with the family. Camping With Kids | Family Travel | RV Trailer | RV Setup | Camping Trailer | Camper | Family Camping | Camping List | RVing With Kids |
A sidewinder sewer hose support is for a nice even flow when draining your tank. No surprises. No plug ups. You’ll want as little mess as possible to avoid contamination.

  14. Gas Powered Generator

You’ll need a powerful generator like this 4000-Watt RV Ready DH Series by Champion. It’s lighter and quieter than your average generator and provides up to 17 hours of run time, powering up your whole RV camping trailer. All you’ll need is gas to power it up and it’s ready to go.

  15. Grey Water Odor Control

After flushing your grey water tank, pour some of this odor control into your sink or any drain leading to your grey water tank to keep odors out.

  16. Tank Deodorizer

Drop one of these tank deodorizers into your toilet, after flushing out your black water tank. This will keep odors from coming back out into your camper as well.

  17. RV Toilet Paper

Just like buying toilet paper that is septic safe if you have a septic system for your home, special RV toilet paper is a must have for avoiding tank issues in your camping trailer.

  18. Aluminum Folding Step Stool

When reaching into high cupboards, for cleaning, or setting up gear, you’ll need a solid stepping stool to access all of the unreachable spots. This one has a weight capacity of 1000 lbs and can be used for many other purposes around the home as well. The built-in level helps when setting up your camper!

  19. RV Awning Screen

Provide UV protection for your family when hanging out outside with an awning screen. Easy to install, simply make sure you order the right length measurement for your awning.

  20. Screened Pop-Up Shelter

We all know how bad the bugs get when camping! A screened pop-up shelter is easy to set up and will provide protection from the sun and from pesky critters. Kids will love to hang out inside of it, to cool down in the shaded area, or to shelter on a rainy day. It’s large enough to set up a picnic table inside.

We love the Coleman Instant Screenhouse too!

  21. Pop-Up Camping Trash Can

An extensive list of everything you'll need, gear, and necessities for setup and camping in an RV trailer or camper with the family. Camping With Kids | Family Travel | RV Trailer | RV Setup | Camping Trailer | Camper | Family Camping | Camping List | RVing With Kids |
This is ideal for any camping situation. A pop-up trash can is easy to store, lightweight, easy to clean, and makes cleaning up your area that more convenient. The handles allow you to carry your garbage to wherever need be to dump, and having it outside of your camper helps to keep the inside of your trailer clean and tidy.

There’s a blue one for recycling as well!

  22. Broom

You know that metal lip that’s by the front door of your camper? Thats for brushing everything out without using a dustpan. All you need is a basic broom to get everything out before coming in with a Swiffer (next item below). No more crumbs from the kids!

  23. Swiffer WetJet

With kids running around, spills are bound to happen. A Swiffer WetJet makes cleaning your RV camper floors easy, especially the vinyl floors that most campers have. This will help keep your trailer smelling fresh and your floors not sticky, if you know what I mean.

  24. Folding Table

A folding table comes in handy to place outside, under your awning or pop-up gazebo. You can use it to place your table top BBQ on, to serve food, or simply for extra counter space. We use ours to eat outside, keeping food and crumbs out of our camper. It’s also great for cards or family game night!

  25. Portable Propane BBQ

We just purchased our Weber Q1200 portable BBQ this summer and are so happy we did! It has enough surface area to feed a family of four. We bring it everywhere with us, from camping, to the beach, or lake, or cottage! You can purchase the compatible foldable stand, but we place ours on our foldable table when camping.

  26. Marshmallow Roasting Sticks

Ideal for roasting marshmallows by the campfire, these campfire roasting sticks can also be used for cooking anything on the fire! Cook sausages, hot dogs, corn, steak, etc. The kids will love to cook with their own coloured stick, and stand back safely as their stick extends far enough out.

  27. Electric Kettle

An electric kettle comes in handy for boiling and purifying water from your camper’s taps before drinking or cooking with. You’ll need one if you need to make baby formula, and for mornings when you’ll be making Tim Hortons Instant Coffee.

  28. Premium Tim Hortons Instant Coffee

I have to throw this one in there. There’s nothing like a Tim Hortons coffee, and the premium instant blend is a must for quick coffees at the camper. We usually grab ours in a huge bottle from Costco, but it’s also available on Amazon!

  29. Insulated Tumbler

    .
These tumblers are durable and convenient to use with their magnetic lids. Perfect for camping or any outdoor adventure, you’ll be able to keep your drink hot or cold because of the superior insulation and best of all, it’s easy to clean!

  30. Rambler Drink Insulator

Similarly to the tumblers mentioned above, these insulated stainless steal colsters are vacuum sealed and perfect for keeping canned beverages ice cold. Enjoy a cold beer that stays cold longer, or any other canned beverage. They have ones for tallboys too!

  31. Portable Ice Maker

An extensive list of everything you'll need, gear, and necessities for setup and camping in an RV trailer or camper with the family. Camping With Kids | Family Travel | RV Trailer | RV Setup | Camping Trailer | Camper | Family Camping | Camping List | RVing With Kids |
We have yet to buy one of these! Who doesn’t want an endless supply of ice when camping? We somehow always forget to grab a bag of ice at the store beforehand and have to make an extra trip back to get some. This portable ice maker would be a life save when camping.

  32. Eco-Friendly Plates

It’s always important to use environmentally friendly supplies while camping–these paper-like plates are made with sugarcane fibre (no trees were cut down) and can be composted (biodegradable), or burned in the campfire without exposing any toxins. They’re safe to reheat in the microwave and to have around kids.

  33. Eco-Friendly Cutlery

Similar to the biodegradable paper plates mentioned above, this disposable wooden cutlery set is also biodegradable, compostable, and renewable. They’re non-toxic, and too can be thrown into the campfire because there are no toxic chemicals in the product. A great alternative to using plastic when camping.

  34. Durable YETI Tundra Cooler

Although on the pricier side, there are numerous reasons why you should invest in a YETI Tundra Cooler for you and your family. These coolers are durable, heavy duty, weather resistant and bear-resistant. It offers extended ice retention with superior insulation compared to others on the market, and the thing is virtually indestructible. Great for keeping your food and drinks safe outside of your camper, or for any outdoor adventure.

This is definitely a quality, luxury item. If you’re looking for something much more affordable and still functional, try going with this rolling cooler on wheels which has 75 qt storage space, or the Coleman 100 qt cooler which is comparable to the Yeti mentioned above and half the price!

  35. Water Jug or Container

If you’re able to fill up a water container from home, with filtered water, that would be ideal to bring over to the camper so that you’ll have fresh water for drinking and cooking. These containers come in handy with their convenient valve for pouring water out.

  36. Folding Director’s Camping Chairs

These director’s chairs was our gift to John for Father’s Day and he absolutely loves them. We got ours in a 2-pack from Costco and we love how they are are extremely sturdy and durable, with a weight capacity of 350 lbs! The tray comes in handy as well with a drink holder and a cell phone holder.

  37. Comfy Padded Folding Camping Chairs

Mac Sports Extra-padded Club Chair, 2-pack | Walmart Canada
We’re all about snuggling with our little ones and staying cozy, especially when camping. These cushioned camping chairs are huge, durable, with a ton of comfortable padding. It’s just like sitting on a couch while outside! Glamping at it’s finest. They even have a wine glass holder. Cheers!

    Grey available on Amazon here.

  38. Kids Camping Chairs

These Coleman Camping Chairs have lasted our girls for years! They come with carrying cases and the chair fabric itself is extremely durable. They even glow in the dark! Our girls are 5 and 7 now, and they still use them when camping.

  39. Portable High Chair

A portable high chair comes in handy for feeding babies outside! Fold up for easy storage and transport, and keep food and mess out of your camper. Easy clean-up too!

  40. RV Outdoor Reversible Camping Rug / Mat

    Reversible Mats Outdoor Patio/RV Camping Mat - Swirl (Black/White, 9-Feet x 18-Feet)
These extra long outdoor camping rugs are made to run alongside your camper, under your awning. They help prevent dirt from entering your camper, as it’s a place to wipe your feet and leave your shoes before going inside. It’s also fabulous for kids to play on (since they never wear shoes anyway), soft on the feet, and are breathable for grass underneath. We love how the colours on ours match our camper!

You can buy this exact camping rug over at: Home Depot, Amazon, and Walmart.

  41. Inflatable Loungers

We have yet to purchase these, but we know people who have the inflatable loungers from Amazon and their kids love them! They’re really cute and the kids always love to inflate them themselves and hangout on them.

  42. RV Mattress Topper Short Queen

This summer, we purchased a memory foam mattress topper in the size short queen (RV size) which fits on most RV mattresses. It makes a world of a difference, especially if you have trouble sleeping while camping (those damn chirping birds at 5 am!!!) This will help, I promise.

  43. Waterproof Mattress Protectors

Accidents are bound to happen, especially with kids! Your child may accidentally wet the bed or spill their chocolate milk (heaven forbid) on those foam bunkbed mattresses. We have mattress protectors on our master bed and bunk bed mattresses. We even have extras to lay down on the turned-to-a-bed-couch or turned-to-a-bed-dining-table for when guests are camping with us.

Note: With out short queen mattress, the queen size mattress protector fits perfectly.

  44. Cinemood Portable Movie Projector

If you follow me on Instagram, you know we use our Cinemood all the time, especially when travelling and camping. It has preprogrammed cartoons for the kids (and Disney!) as well as Netflix and Amazon Prime integrated. We can watch a movie on our ceiling, set it up on the wall for the kids by their bunks, or outside on the side of our camper to simulate a drive-in! Definitely a must have for families.

  45. Waterproof Shockproof Bluetooth Speaker

Wherever you decide to camp, accidents are bound to happen. With this waterproof and shockproof bluetooth speaker, you can listen to your favourite tunes just about anywhere, without fear of dropping it into the lake or pool, or onto rocks. Durable, compact for packing (just throw it in your trunk!) and works great in conjunction with the Cinemood for a better quality sound when watching movies!

  46. Wifi Range Extender

If you are parking at a camping ground, you may be in a spot with a weak wifi signal. This wifi range extender comes in handy for strengthening your wifi signal. We use ours when camping in our own backyard!

  47. Essential Oil Diffuser

Yes, this will come in handy when camping! Camping trailers tend to get stuffy, especially if you haven’t opened the windows to air them out. An essential oil diffuser will help to freshen  and purify the air in your camper, as well as offer a ton of benefits such as aiding in a good night’s sleep and promoting calmness and relaxation. Additionally, essential oils such as Peppermint, Lavender, Eucalyptus, and Cedarwood will help to ward off insects and rodents

  48. Collapsable Laundry Hamper

An extensive list of everything you'll need, gear, and necessities for setup and camping in an RV trailer or camper with the family. Camping With Kids | Family Travel | RV Trailer | RV Setup | Camping Trailer | Camper | Family Camping | Camping List | RVing With Kids |
The secret to hiding dirty clothes in the camper is by putting them in a collapsible laundry hamper, in the tub in the bathroom. Out of sight, out of mind! And when not in use, it collapses into basically nothing, taking up very little space and easy to store away.

  49. Flashlights or Lanterns

We absolutely love having these collapsible lanterns around while camping because they’re compact and easy to store in our camper, taking up very little room. They’re perfect for walks at night, when you’re out in he woods or around the campfire. When you’re not camping, they’re great for emergencies like power outages at home.

  50. First Aid Kit

You never know when someone might get hurt. With kids, a scraped knee here and there will happen, so it’s always good to be prepared. We carry a first aid kit in the back of our SUV for when on the go, and another one in our camping trailer.

There is definitely a lot you’ll need when camping in an RV or camper, but it’s much better to be prepared so that there isn’t any stress and tears when you’re trying to enjoy a camping family vacation.

My husband recommends all of the technical gear–the hoses and plumbing and electrical stuff–because that’s all we use for quick set-up with our camper. Trust me, you’ll want set-up to be easy and fast, so you can get that AC running, and little bellies full of food fast! And maybe even enjoy a cold one.

I hope this list comes in handy for you and your family, and again, go ahead and bookmark the page for future reference. If you have anything else you swear by using with your own camper, I’d love to know!

5 Steps to Start a Food Blog

Kudos to you! You made it. You’re here. And you’re ready to start a food blog.

Although nothing in life is as easy as it seems–blogging has its ups and downs and can be overwhelming–you’re here, you’re ready to take it on. And I promise it will be oh, so, worth it.

  1. Choose a domain name
  2. Set up a self hosted website
  3. Choose a theme
  4. Download essential plugins

1) Choose a Domain Name for Your Food Blog

This is the fun part because you can be as creative as you’d like, or, use your own name as your brand name.

Due to the fact that northsouthblonde.com is a food and lifestyle blog, the name reflects my lifestyle as opposed to a traditional food blog title. It’s all up to you!

Brainstorm a few of your ideas and check for their availability over at Bluehost under the menu titled “Domains”.

How to Start a Food Blog in Four Easy Steps

You can also check to see if a domain name is taken by searching right here:

2) Set Up a Self Hosted Website

Once you’re set on a domain name, go back to Bluehost’s homepage and click on the green button labelled “Get Started”. From there, you can choose the plan you want to host your website.

Think of hosting like renting an online space to display your website. Bluehost is the perfect host provider for beginners. Easy to use, has the most affordable rates, and offers to host your domain name for free when you sign up–no extra purchase necessary.

I recommend starting with the basic plan when just starting out. Keep in mind, paying the lump sum payment will save you loads of cash in the long run.

How to Start a Food Blog in Four Easy Steps

Automatically Install WordPress

WordPress is the best software out there to manage your food blog. From a wide variety of themes to choose from, to SEO plugins, recipe card plugins, never-ending features and endless capabilities to build a solid, profitable food blog

Bluehost is a fantastic option because they now have a new sign-up process called Bluerock that allows for WordPress to be installed automatically once signup is complete!

4) Choose a Theme for Your Food Blog

Welcome to the blogging world! This is the fun part. You get to pick a theme–choose from plenty of free themes or simply purchase one. Then get customizing and sharing anything your little heart desires.

How to Start a Food Blog in Five Easy Steps

My very first theme for North South Blonde was the Button Theme which was simple and great for beginners, allowing you to add customizable widgets in a sidebar. It was free!

Now, I use The Genesis Framework where I can use custom CSS coding to change pretty much anything I want from font style to image hover opacities.

If you know how to use CSS, you can add it to any theme by activating the CSS WordPress widget in your sidebar. Otherwise, most themes will allow you to change the fonts and colours around to your liking.

When it comes to food blogging, you’ll want a website that beautifully displays your recipes in an orderly fashion. Remember that less in more and a clean looking blog will be easier to navigate.

Here are a few food related themes you may be interested in:

Foodie Pro Theme

Cafe Pro Theme

Cook’d Pro Theme

Brunch Pro Theme

Let’s not forget about the most important aspect of food blogging–food photography!

In this post I share everything you need to know about Lightroom presets. You’ll read all my photography tips as well as the gear I use and recommend.

5) Download Essential Plugins

Recipe Card Plugin

There are many free recipe card plugins with limited features, but is plenty enough to get you started. This will highlight your recipe, and organize your ingredients and instructions. Let’s not forget that a recipe card is great for SEO (search engine optimization) as well as a place to display ads and earn money.

I use WP Recipe Maker, but you may also be interested in WP Tasty.

Social Share Buttons

In order to start growing your readership and get your recipes viewed, you’ll need essential plugins like social share buttons which is key for sharing your recipes on all social platforms.

As a food blog, the majority of my traffic comes from Pinterest. I use the Grow plugin by Mediavine which adds social sharing buttons to my posts, as well as a Pin It button to my images. All fully customizable!

SEO Plugin

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for a food blog. The plugin Yoast SEO allows you to fully optimize every recipe post using keywords, titles, a focus word, and much more.

This will make search engines, like Google,  bring your recipe to the eyes of others whenever they are searching for something that relates to what you’ve created.

Iced Coffee Made With Instant Coffee

Is it me or is this summer hotter than usual? The sun is shining and all I want to do is sip on a cold, refreshing iced coffee without all the sugar.

Forget about brewing coffee–for this recipe, all you need to do is boil some water, throw in some instant coffee, and whip up your whipping cream topping.

Instant Iced Coffee Ingredients

I’m all about convenience and having more time to make summer memories with my family. Plus, getting that coffee fix is a must, and not having to worry about my coffee going cold!

ICED COFFEE IS ALREADY COLD and delicious! You’re welcome.

All you need is:

  • Boiling water
  • Instant coffee
  • Ice cubes
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Vanilla flavoured MCT powder
  • Stevia
  • Cinnamon (optional)

Froth Heavy Whipping Cream, MCT Powder and Stevia

Cream is your best friend when enjoying a low carb, ketogenic diet. It does not contain as much sugar content as milk does, and it’s simply creamy and delicious.

One serving of cream is about one net carb.

The MCT powder I use is vanilla flavoured and gives the perfect boost for kickstarting ketosis. It’s perfect to add to your morning coffee, or for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Health Benefits of MCT Oil or Powder Include:

  • Provides energy mentally and physically
  • Promotes fat burn by using fat as energy
  • Suppresses appetite, making you feel full
  • Prevents yeast, candida, and bacteria from growing in the body
  • Converts into ketones which burns fat on a low carb/ketogenic diet
  • Controls bloog sugar levels and reduces risk of heart disease

Can I make Keto Iced Coffee Without MCT Powder?

Yes, MCT powder is just a quick boost to produce more ketones in your body and kickstart burning fat and using your body’s fat for fuel.

Without the MCT powder, this instant iced coffee is still low carb, sugar free, and therefore won’t spike your blood sugar levels.

If you skip on the MCTs, just add in a teaspoon of vanilla extract to flavour your coffee instead.

How to Make Keto Iced Coffee

  1. Boil water and pour halfway into your mug, add instant coffee and one packet of stevia. Mix. Add in 1 cup or a handful of ice cubes.
  2. In a separate cup, combine your heavy whipping cream with a packet of sweetener of choice (I use Stevia), and vanilla flavoured MCT powder. Whip together using a milk frother from Amazon and pour on top of your iced coffee. Mix with a spoon, if desired.

Cold Brewed Coffee VS Instant Iced Coffee

Cold brewed coffee is basically you making a pot of coffee using ground coffee beans in a filter in your coffee machine. You would place your pot of coffee in the fridge to chill overnight, and enjoy the next day with ice, cream, and sweetener.

Instant coffee, on the other hand, is exactly what its name implies. A spoonful of instant coffee in a mug of boiling water, instantly dissolves by mixing it with a spoon and becomes a quick cup of joe. To turn it into iced coffee, you just need to add a heck of a lot of ice cubes!

How to Slice Eggplant

Similarly to baking eggplant in the oven,  like my mini eggplant pizzas, it’s the same process.

After washing your eggplants, you’ll slice them into 1/4 inch thick rounds. You’ll need about two eggplants to feed four people.

How to Prepare Eggplant for The Barbecue

There really isn’t anything easier than preparing eggplant for grilling.

All you have to do is set aside 15 minutes for your eggplant slices to rest on some paper towels with salt on top. This will extract its water content.

Then, your eggplant slices are ready to be seasoned and barbecued!

Garlic and Parmesan Eggplant Seasoning

This is the magic blend that will get you that mouth watering flavour and crispy outer layer.

You’ll need:

  • olive oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder (not garlic salt)
  • oregano
  • grated parmesan

For coating:

You can either brush it on your eggplant slices with a basting brush, or simply rub the mixture on by hand, evenly coating each side.

How to Grill Eggplant

Before you know it, you’ll have delicious crispy grilled eggplant in no time!

Preheat your grill to medium heat (depending on your grill, preheating usually takes 10-15 minutes).

Place your coated eggplant slices on your hot grill, evenly spaced out. Grill for 5-6 minutes per side and flip. You only need to flip once! You’ll see those sizzling grill marks on the other sides.

How to Make a Sweet Pear Glaze

First thing’s first. Start making your sweet pear glaze using fresh and ripe green Anjou pears from your local grocer.

  1. You’ll need to chop two Anjou pears up into cubes, leaving out the core.
  2. In a heated frying pan, cook the pears in olive oil or coconut oil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Add one cup of water and cook with the lid on until all the juices have seeped out and the pears are soft–about 20 minutes.
  3. Remove the pears from the pan, leaving only the liquid inside.
  4. Add to the liquid one tablespoon of 0-calorie sweetener like stevia or erythritol. Continue to cook on medium heat to reduce, with the lid off and stirring often so that it doesn’t burn.
  5. Once the liquid turns to a thick glaze, remove the pan from the heat.

How to Know When a Pear is Ripe

Pears should be left on the counter at room temperature to ripen.

You’ll want to use ripened pears to get away from that ‘tart’ taste, with very little sweetness. The more ripe they are, the sweeter they are.

You’ll know when your pears are ripe by gently pressing your thumb into the neck of the pear. If the pear gives slightly after pressing, then it’s nice and sweet and ready to eat.

Once your pears have ripened, you can store them in the fridge for 4-5 days.

Health Benefits of Pears

Anjou pears are the perfect sweet treat to add to any recipe, while providing many nutrients for the whole family.

Health benefits of pears include:
  • Rich in antioxidants to fight off free radicals and protect against cancer
  • High in fibre (Pectin) which aids digestion and improves overall gut health
  • Low in calories, great for weight loss
  • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease

How to Make Vegan Chicken

This is the fun part! My first time making vegan chicken was such a success, I couldn’t wait to share how I did it with all of you. And, it’s a lot easier than you’d think!

You’ll need a 170 gram package of Tempeh, which will make about three chicken breasts (prepared alternative meat substitutes will also work).

Unwrap the package of Tempeh and cut into cubes.

Vegan Chicken Ingredients and Seasoning

Place the cubed tempeh in a large bowl as well as one cup of almond flour and 1/8 cup of water.

Then add your seasonings.

I used one full cube of Not Chick’n Bouillon (vegan friendly), a teaspoon of garlic powder, onion powder, and a generous dash of salt and pepper.

Using your hands, knead the mixture until a dough-like ball forms. Be sure to squish the tempeh cubes with your fingers to combine well with the seasonings.

How to Cook Chicken Meat Substitute

  1. Grab a handful of the vegan chicken mixture and place it between two pieces of wax paper.
  2. Press down on the mixture with your hand, forming a 1-inch thick chicken breast patty. Use the wax paper to flatten evenly and tightly.
  3. You’ll have enough mixture to make about three vegan chicken pieces.
  4. Heat a frying pan over medium heat with olive oil and add the three vegan chicken. Cook for about 5 minutes per side, flipping only once, and making sure the bottom side is golden before flipping.
  5. Be careful when flipping, make sure the patty stays intact by flipping it with a spatula.

How to Make a Summer Salad

In a large serving bowl, throw in either baby spinach, chopped romaine lettuce, or spring mix (I used spring mix with arugula).

Drizzle two tablespoons of olive oil and two tablespoons of vinegar.

Add a generous handful of sugar free dried cranberries and pecans.

Place your vegan chicken on top and drizzle the sweet pear glaze on top. Done!
