Book Review: Invisible Ties

10 March 2018 at 13:00

Thank you Nadya A. R. for sending me this book. Reading Invisible Ties has indeed been a journey itself, because of the way it has been written and the story which is rich with details and emotions.

This book is about Noor Kamal, a girl with a tragic past, who is now trapped in a love-less arranged marriage with an investment banker. Shy Noor grows up with testy relationship with her mother in Karachi, whose life is suddenly turned topsy-turvy when violence hits home. A tale of love, complications, duties and conflicting emotions, Invisible ties is a saga of flawed characters and their tangled lives.

My Thoughts:

Nadya has a compelling way of spinning tales and has perfectly used words to portray the struggles of these characters. Invisible ties takes us on a journey accompanying Noor’s conflicting emotions and moods. Every scene is perfectly described, and Nadya has narrated every turn in these characters’ lives perfectly by using her majestic words.

Noor’s transformation from a shy girl with a tragic past to a self-assured female has been the highlight of the book. As has been Noor’s relationship with her perfectionist mother who has done nothing but express her disappointment with Noor’s looks and social skills. As a result of this and the tragedy mentioned above, Noor detaches herself from the people around her and finds an escape inside her own mind and ideals.

The one thing that irked me about this book was the fact that while I was reading it, I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. But perhaps that was intended. Maybe it was because of Noor’s detached way of looking at life around her to protect herself, but the characters in the book failed to inspire or devastate me. I couldn’t empathize with their struggles and many times, I struggled to even like any of them.

This book’s ending is far from a fairytale ending, it’s like real life. Messy, complicated and makes you wonder what if. All in all, this book is the realest thing I’ve read in 2018.

If you’re looking for a light rom com with a strong female character which makes you feel giddy with romance, this is not the book for you. This book is messy, complicated and bitter sweet which will make you think about the relationships around you. Highly recommended for everyone who likes reading about flawed and real characters.

Exploring Baku – Top 5 Things You Cannot Miss Out On!

18 February 2018 at 13:08

I recently took a 5 day spur-of-the-moment-trip to Baku with a friend and the minute I stepped off the plane, I was blown away. And not just because it was windy and freezing, mind you.

Baku Azerbaijan Near Baku Eye Flame Towers Baku Azerbaijan

To say that Baku is beautiful would be a bit of an understatement. The streets, the architecture, the natural beauty and the overall vibe of the place makes you feel like you’re in a painting.

Or a Yash Raj film where you’ll be dancing in the snow anyy minute

So if you’re planning on flying out to Baku for a visit, here are the 5 places you should definitely check out!

1. Heydar Aliyev Center

If you like museums, architecture and want to see something that will put you in awe, you should not miss out on Heydar Aliyev Center. Designed by Zaha Hadid, this signature landmark of Baku is a perfect representation of fluidity and curves. The exterior and the interior will make you feel like you’re in an episode of Black mirror as every piece is modern yet with a story behind it.

2. Nizami Street

From high-end brands to local trinkets, whatever your shopping heart desires, you’ll find it at Nizami Street. This shopping street is a hip and lively avenue with a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and super markets.

Did I mention how stunning this is at night? It’s the perfect place to chill and grab food after a long day touristing.

3. Maiden Tower

Maiden tower is located in the old city and was built way back in the 12th century. While the tower has many legends and stories associated with it, my favourite is the version where the king falls in love with his daughter and decides to marry her. To delay the wedding, she asks her father to build the biggest most beautiful tower they’ve ever seen. Once it was completed, she climbs up top to admire the view but jumps off the tower into the Caspian Sea to avoid her ill fate.

The entire place is beautiful with medieval vibes as well as a vast surrounding market. Go walk around and you’re bound to find beautiful handcrafted scarfs, carpets and other gifts for home.

4. Fire Mountain

The best way to describe Yanar Dağ is that it’s a mountain on fire. A 10 meter long wall of fire continuously burns on the hill all year round, in spite of rain or snow which is why the locals consider this place holy. This has been burning for over a thousand years and was even mentioned by Alexander Dumas and Marco Polo.

Here’s a video (not mine) to show you why this place is so fascinating!

5. Qabala

Okay so technically this is a separate city in Azerbaijan and not a part of Baku, but it was honestly the best part of my trip. We drove up 6 hours to this resort, sat in chair lifts, enjoyed the snow, had ice cream in the freezing cold, did sledding and then almost cried when it was time to go back.

My biggest regret is not having enough time to stay the night there so I could make a fool of myself in the snow first thing in the morning. Sigh.

Other Noteworthy Places to Visit:

While these are just the top 5, there are many many places in Baku you should definitely visit. The city is rich with culture, beauty, and the most welcoming people you’ll ever meet who’ll show you nothing but warmth and respect.

Clazona BB Plus Review

21 January 2018 at 15:20

Yep. It’s that time of the year again when winter says hello and you say goodbye to your normal well-behaved skin. The moment it gets even slightly chilly, my skin decides to become dry and patchy. The only solution? Loading up on moisturizers to avoid looking like a white walker.

where’s my moisturizer @

In all this winter madness, and for the sake of looking like a normal human being at work, I decided to try Clazona BB Plus for a couple of weeks.

Clazona BB Plus

First off, the tube is beautiful and very convenient. It’s in a cute blue tube with a screw cap, and in a size which makes it easy to just carry it around in your purse.

The BB Cream is thick and creamy, yet very lightweight. It blended easily even though I just used a tiny amount and gave my skin a much needed glow.

  • Lightweight
  • Moisturizes the skin very well
  • Covers dark spots and pores
  • Gives it a nice glow for every day usage
  • Costs just Rs. 500

  • I’m used to putting on foundation so the BB cream didn’t exactly give me the same amount of smooth finish. I’ll be using this for my day to day look and relying on a good old fashioned foundation for the more fancy events.

I love this product. I for one would definitely recommend this to anyone who believes in comfort and looking flawless at the same time.

Mi 6 comes with wide angle and telephoto lenses used to incredible effect, particularly the ability to shoot beautiful portraits with out-of-focus backgrounds. The two lenses allow Mi 6 to calculate what is in the foreground and what is in the background, creating a depth of field effect that typically requires a DSLR camera to achieve. In addition, an improved Beautify mode that makes selfies look more natural, now works with the rear camera on Mi 6. Mi 6 also features 2x optical zoom, which makes sure photos of distant subjects remain clear, while 10x digital zoom is also supported. Mi 6 also comes with four-axis OIS so images and videos remain sharp, reducing the effect of handshake or motion.

Thanks to MIUI optimizations, Mi Max 2 is great for use in any situation. With “Split screen”, two applications are able to run in the foreground, letting users make full use of the large 6.44-inch display. For instance, a user can watch a video using the top half of the screen while replying to messages in the lower half.

Mi Max 2 is powered by a massive 5300mAh two-day battery, which provides up to 18 hours of video playback, 21 hours of GPS navigation, or 57 hours of talktime. The huge battery means that Mi Max 2 can even charge other smartphones connected to its USB Type-C port. Despite the large capacity, Mi Max 2 is able to charge 68% in one hour as it supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 with parallel charging, which allows fast charging while controlling temperature increase.

Time for the ‘Achi Biwi’ stereotype to retire!

29 August 2017 at 12:38

Once upon a time in a land not so far away, whenever a girl would come of age she’d have to pass a series of tests before the village would deem her fit for marriage aka an Achi Biwi. Now these random tests wouldn’t take into account her intellect or overall personality; but instead assessed her domestic skills specifically those related to food. Can she feed her family by slaving in the kitchen all day? She’s a keeper folks!

Seems a bit far-fetched doesn’t it? Sadly, while many people have come to their senses, this still happens within our society. As soon as you hit an age where you’re done with your education, rishta aunties swoop in like vultures and try to get you married off as if their lives depended on it.

And what’s the main prerequisite for the entire shenanigan? You got it; Expert Level Cooking Skills!

“Beta khaana toh bana leti ho na?”

“Packet wala khaana khaana thori hota hai. Hum toh pooray din khud se masalay pees k family k liye khaana banatay hain.”

“Bazaar k masalay? Log kya kahaingay?”

“Packet walay masalay? How lazy!”

Sadly to this day, I’ve heard statements like these being thrown around by educated women. To whom I’d simply like to say that ‘hey, just because I don’t prefer to spend all day in the kitchen cooking doesn’t make me a failure. So let’s throw the achi biwi stereotype out of the window maybe?’

This ad by National Foods really hit home with this sentiment. We live in a day and age where we’ve got a lot of different options, which provide us with the utmost convenience. Recipe mixes especially have made things so much easier, by providing great tasting meals with 10% of the hassle. National Recipe Mixes offers convenience to all women by providing them with ease of preparation for amazing meals while giving the same consistent taste that makes every meal an unforgettable experience for the entire family.

By significantly cutting down on prep time, National Recipe Mixes gives women the time to do other things. Manage a career, spend time with your family and friends, or simply go out shopping! They get a chance to rediscover and reconnect with themselves more often.

Shout out to all the women who define their own set of rules, rather than conforming to the standards set by society. #NotaFailure

— Shamilah Rashid (@ShamilahR) August 19, 2017

So ladies, it’s about time we get rid of these archaic stereotypes. And needless to say, just because you make your own recipe for success you’re #NotaFailure!

Book Review: The Other Half of Happiness

31 July 2017 at 03:52

Liberty Books was gracious enough to send me this book to review and fuel my on-going bibliophilia.

When I received the Other Half of Happiness in the mail, I was excited and low-key terrified that I wouldn’t like it as much as Sophia Khan is not obliged. Luckily, I was hooked the minute I picked up this book.

In this sequel, Sophia Khan has gone ahead and married a gora; causing a whole lot of scandal, heartbreak and long lectures (from her mum of course). But her living situation is in shambles, her husband is becoming increasing distant and life is clearly not what she expected it to be. So when her mum forces them to have a belated wedding ceremony and some major secrets are revealed, the whole situation might just tear the two lovebirds apart.

My Thoughts:

There’s nothing I love more than a chick flick on a lazy weekend spent in bed. Add a Muslim girl to the narrative and some desi drama and the story becomes a zillion times more relatable. The book is witty, fast-paced, thought provoking and hilarious. In fact, it has so much ‘halal humour’ that’s bound to have you in stitches.

The story opens up with ‘Oh my actual God. There’s a man in my bed! A real man.’

I found myself zipping through this book, laughing at most of the jokes, tutting at all the desi faux pas and sniffling at the almost-heartbreaks. Ayisha Malik has the skill to write great characters who serve their purpose and keep developing page by page. She’s blessed with excellent comedic timing and sharp dialogues which perfectly captures the essence of the madness within the Khan household.

If you’re looking for a Muslim version of Bridget Jones’s diary with an overbearing mum who means well, lots of laugh out loud moments, Bollywood worthy drama, a filthy smoking habit, and an obsession with biscuits; give this book a read.

JS Honors Sarfraz for Spectacular Win Against India in Champion’s Trophy 2017

3 July 2017 at 16:12

2017 is half over and undoubtedly the best moment of this year has been Pakistan’s magnificent win against India in the Champion’s Trophy. Cricket lovers and non-lovers can agree on the fact that the match on 18th June was like a masalay-daar movie. There was action, there was drama, love (patriotic of course) and a sappy happy ending.

Let’s not forget the villain as well *cough*

Pakistan thrashed India and won by 180 runs, bringing home the trophy and a whole lot of love for the entire team. But one name that manages to stand out amongst the team is of course the captain Sarfraz Ahmed who was definitely the key ingredient to our victory in the tournament.

Sarfaraz got a BMW courtesy of JS Bank! Looks like the #CT17 fever is still not over 😍💚#JSHonorsSarfraz

The players got a grand welcome back to their respective home-towns and were showered with love, respect and gifts. Sarfraz in fact got a huge crowd outside his house cheering him on!

The management of JS Bank showed their respect by honoring Sarfraz with a BMW X1! it was a grand gesture by JS Bank to show their love and respect to a superb sportsman who led Pakistan to victory. This took place at Shoaib Akhtar and Wasim Akram’s TV show Geo Khelo Pakistan.

This was a great gesture by JS Bank; unexpected from a financial institution but greatly appreciated since Sarfraz deserves all the respect and honor for his performance and leadership skills.

7 signs your Mum is your BFF

8 April 2017 at 18:15

I have zero shame in admitting that I consider my mother to be my life-long best friend. The mother daughter relationship is a special bond in itself based on unconditional love and respect but what makes it even better if you can become friends. So what makes her crème de le crème when it comes to friends? No one knows me better as she’s been there for it all; the first words, the first steps, the good years days and the bad. And now that I have gotten older it’s easy to see how much we have in common.

Since I know I can’t possibly be the only one with a super cool mother, here are 7 signs your mother is your BBF.

1. She’s your biggest support

Whether it’s a new job, some project at work or simply some run-of-the-mill high school drama, you know your mum is your constant source of support!

2. And your biggest critic

She might have your back in all things big and small, but the minute you’re being stupid she won’t be afraid to drop some brutal advice.

3. She knows you inside and out

She’ll read you like a book (annoyingly so at times) and you won’t need words to get your point across.

That oh-so-subtle look you give her at a dawat to say it’s time to go home

4. You share the same interests

While other kids complain about things like the generation gap, you can’t wait to get home to the FRIENDS marathon you have planned with your mother.

Grew up watching my mum read which turned me into the reader I am today. Books are something we both can't go without 😍 #ProudToBeMyMum

— Shamilah Rashid (@ShamilahR) March 6, 2017

5.  She has all the answers

Whether it’s problems related to cultural norms, friends drama, boys, existentialist crises, or even religion, she has all the answers. And even when she doesn’t, she’ll lend an ear and help figure things out with you.

6. She’s the best secret keeper

My mother knows about every single conversation, scandal and gossip that happens within my social circle. It’s both amusing and stressful when she meets the friends she’s heard so much about.

The mum clause stops her from revealing all

7.  She’s taught you everything you know

She gave birth to you, helped you take your first steps, watched you learn and struggle with ABCs and then with puberty. Life-long friend? Check!

After a point, you realize that you’ve picked up on one or more of her personality traits and it only makes you a better person.

It’s a rare and lucky thing to be friends with your mum, so you can turn that typical mother-daughter relationship into one that screams BFF.

Eventually, you realize you’re becoming just like her, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. #ProudtoBeMyMum

The moment you realise that you're becoming more and more like your mother each passing day.#ProudToBeMyMum

Sparkistan – A Hero’s Journey

17 March 2017 at 03:54

In a time where we’re ambushed by tragic stories of racism, sexism, xenophobia and religious discrimination, it’s easy to lose hope and sink into gloom. While it’s abundant that international media isn’t doing a good job portraying Pakistan in a positive light, the local media isn’t doing any better either. In a time like this where people need someone to look up to, someone to inspire them, to keep holding on and to keep going forward, Atlas Battery has come up with the Sparkistan initiative!

If you’re an active Twitter user in Pakistan, you’re bound to have come across #Sparkistan. An initiative that seeks to highlight the unsung heroes who have a spark within, and who motivate the nation with their determination, strength and amazing accomplishments.

Atlas Battery has travelled all over Pakistan to record and bring forth the stories of 15 extraordinary heroes. Here’s the Sparkistan Anthem that instantly gives everyone patriotic and positive feels.

Here are few heroes that you may not have heard about but should definitely know about!

Nazir Sabir

A man whose own brother & friends lost their lives in the mountains but he never lost determination. Nazir Sabir’s spark led him to the mountains and he spent his life climbing the highest peaks. He’s climbed K2 and Mount Everest, proving that a man’s determination and willpower can help him achieve anything he wants.

Aneeqa Bano

While many people view disabled children as a burden, Aneeqa Bano and Afzal Rasool started a school for special kids in order to provide them with opportunities in the future. This just goes to prove that every child deserves education, regardless of how they’re different from one another. People like Aneeqa who strive to make lives easier for special children, spread the much-needed positivity around!

Azima Zaidi

Who says a physical disability has to hold you back from your dreams? Azima Zaidi, a 21 year old girl is an exceptional artist who also happens to have a physical disability. Using prosthetic limbs, she’s achieved her dreams and proven that the only disability in life is a bad attitude.

Roma Sayyedian and siblings

The Sayyedain siblings are the perfect example of the potential that the upcoming generation in Pakistan possesses. These kids are the youngest Microsoft Certified professionals in the world who are using technology around them, not to waste time online but instead to achieve milestones many adults can only aspire to achieve. These are the youngest ethical hackers who’ve given cyber security trainings to the FIA making them role models for the entire world!

For your weekly dose of motivation, visit Atlas Battery’s Facebook page or check out the hashtag #Sparkistan on Twitter. Stay tuned for more heroes and stories that will inspire a spark within!
