October 17th-KANNADASAN MEMORIAL DAY.

16 October 2021 at 18:30
அக்டோபர்-17: 'கவியரசர்' கண்ணதாசனின் 38 ஆவது நினைவு நாள் இன்று – www.patrikai.com

This week’s Sunday Story is of different type (Post Number 2650) – normally should have been a Tale of a Blogger! Exemption in the case of Kannadasan as I still even now read his ARTHAMULLA INDHU MADHAM- “Meaningful Hindu Religion”.

Poet Kannadasan was born on Twenty Fourth June Nineteen Twenty Seven at Sirukodalpatti

And passed away on October Seventh, Nineteen hundred and Eighty One at Chicago, Illinois, United States,. was an Indian philosopher, poet, film song lyricist, producer, actor, script-writer,

Editor, philanthropist, and is heralded as one of the greatest and most important lyricists in India.  His original name was Muthiah. His children are Revathi ShanmugamKalaivanan Kannadasan,  His important book  was Cheraman kadali

Indeed a great film lyricist, writer deeply involved in religious study

Wrote ARTHAMULLA INDFHU MADHAM- “Meaningful Hindu Religion”

Who lived opposite to my house in Karaikudi during Nineteen Fifties!

Noted lyricist Kannadasan visited Maha Periyava and as usual they discussed Aanmeegam. Kannadasan was earlier an atheist and wrote articles criticizing religion.

Slowly he changed due to the effect of Maha Periyava who weaned him from useless rationalism. But the basic nature of criticism still Continued.

He asked Maha Periyava when milk is White then how come the Parkadal is shown as Megavarnam? Has the colour of Mahavishnu dissolved in the ocean of milk.

Acharyal gave a smile. He just said ‘Enjoy you will get the reply by noon’.

Kannadasan was perplexed. He dare not sat anything. Vummidi Bangaru Chetty visited the Sri Matham that afternoon. Both Kannadasan and Vummidiyar belonged to the same Chettiar community and greeted each other in their traditional way. Afterwards Vummidiyar placed a Large Green Emerald at the Acharyal’s feet pleading him to accept . The sage had no discrimination for a gem and a monolithic rock.
He asked the staff member of the mutt to bring milk in a vessel. After it was brought he asked Vummidiyar to immerse the emerald in milk.
Now this was a shock to the Jeweller. This is the process used to check the genuineness of emerald in his field.

Did the Kanchi seer suspect his intentions or the gem. Silently he did. Acharyal then Called Kannadasan to see. Kannadasan was shocked. The milk turned pale green and a tinge of light emanated from the Emerald immersed in milk.

Kannadasan was speechless. How did this happen? The Acharyal explained the reason in a scientific way about the change of colour and drew parallel with Parkadal “When Parandaaman is lying in the parkadal,he too emits such radiance. Hence it is Megavarnam’.

Tears filled Kannadasan who then immediately composed the famous song ‘Tiruparkadalil pallikondar Sriman Narayana……….’

As for Vummidiyar, Acharyal Blessed him requesting him to take the Emerald to the Varadaraja perumal kovil and make a Magudam for the Perumal’.

He too wept for his ignorance that he had felt humiliated earlier when Acharyal told him to immerse the emerald in milk. It was not to test the Genuineness of the Gem.

It was the greatness of this Gnana Guru to drive away ignorance and guide people.

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara!

Here is one of his poems in THamizh and my English translation of the sdame:

Translation in English

2.Goddess Parvathy as half

Goddess Parvathy as half and Lord Siva ass half

In justice let us live together!

Knife way honestly culture way nobler

As the world adorns let us live!

In sleeping place and to reach the feet of Almighty

Just in the side we participate!

From the foot to head, with the noble Lord

With lustre the better half live!

Whether suffering or pleasure to come

As better half live!

After mother’s house, self’s house is mother’s house

So treating may the house lady live!

As contemporary luck and as long time prayer

As sweet the family life pass!

I hope that our esteemed viewers would have enjoyed reading this Sunday Story. We shall meet tomorrow with our usual Blog and till then may Kanchi Acharya bless us all! GOOD BYE till then!

On this day, I happily recollect the award that I received in the name of KANNADASAN from “ILAKKIYACH CHOLAI, Chennai.

Here is a great communication from my Spanish poet friend

Poetry Without Borders / By: Germain Droogenbroodt | ATUNIS GALAXY POETRY

Dear Tamil friend,
My Dutch editor, who a few months ago, published my last volume “The Restlessness of the Word“, bilingually Dutch-Spanish, also sends the Ithaca poems to the Flemish and Dutch readers and has suggested to publish one poem from that book as Ithaca 702. Actually he will add 2 more poems as well as  a picture of the cover as publicity for the book. He published several of my books, never asked any money for the publication and pays me royalties. The cover and illustrations of the book are done by my dear friend Satish Gupta, one of the most important Indian painters. The French title of the poem is from a French movie (1991 with beautiful music by the famous Spanish cello player Jordi Savall) and means “All the mornings of the world…”.Best regards

Tous les matins du monde…

NO SUNRISE

There is no sunrise that knows a past

Katta bomman Memorial Day- 16th October.

15 October 2021 at 19:02

Indian Freedom was not achieved just like that for asking-great sacrifices
Were made by the Indians over a long period-for decades and decades
Foundation was laid by many many known very well and not so much
From urban India and rural India from North and South, East and West!

One such was VeeraPandiya Kattabomman whose memorial Day is this day

Sixteenth October Seventeen Hundred Ninety Nine.

An Eighteenth century Palayakarar and chieftain from Panchalankurichi
In Tamil Nadu. refused to accept the sovereignty of the British
East India Company and waged a war against them. was captured by
The British with the help of the ruler of the Kingdom of Pudukottai,
Vijaya Raghunatha Tondaiman and was hanged at Kayathar in
Seventeen Ninety Nine. A great soldier-Chieftain- laid the path
For Freedom Of India in a remarkable manner sacrificing his life.
Our foremost duty today is to safeguard that freedom won from the yoke
Of the British under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi= Father of the Nation!

Dr. Kalam’s Birth Day- 15th OCTOBER.

Dr. Abdul Kalam in his usual method of wishing all!

On this great day of Kalam’s birth day, I recollect the happy occasion of his appreciation of my translation of Thyagayya’s PANCHA RATHNA KIRTHNA into Tamil .

Dr. Abdul Kalam and his love for Karnatic Music

Yes; it was a great day in the life of these music couple of Madurai and their colleague musician! A historical day, an exhilarating day, an inspiring day to remain evergreen in their minds throughout their life time!

It was Friday the 13th February 2015- the day on which former President of India His Excellency Dr. Abdul Kalam visited a humble musician couple living in Madurai to personally hear the great Pancharathna Keerthanas of Thiruvaiyru Thiyagaraja swamigal – Thyagabrammam-in Telugu translated into Tamil from the lips of the karnatic musician accompanied by her husband in violin and a co-musician in Mridhangam.

Dr. Kalam has already heard the renderings in Tamil through the CD which he came across through a common friend. He said that he was so impressed by the translation and the rendition that he used to hear one gem each day. Now utilizing his visit to Madurai he wanted to hear right from the troupe directly! Of course the musicians who with great efforts brought out the CD were making efforts to render the Keerthanas in the presence of the former President who loves Karnatic music, our culture, our traditions, our literature et all with all his heart.

After fulfilling a few engagements in the city of Madurai, he planned to visit the musicians in the night and accordingly he arrived at their humble residence at 9.30 in the night and spent an hour. The musicians were in an ecstatic mood and delighted to have a great and noble personality in their humble residence. As the public saw the former President’s convoy entered the street, there was a big surge to have a glance of Dr. kalam who indeed is “காட்சிக்கு எளியவன், கடுஞ்சொல்லன் அல்லன்” எனவே சிறந்த ஆட்சியாளனாக விளங்கியவர், உலகமே வியந்து பாராட்டப்பட்டவர்.

As Dr. kalam arrived he was received with a shawl and the team that rendered the “five gems” of the Saint composer was duly introduced. As he was eager to hear the melodious rendering of “ENTHARO MAHANUBAVULU”- “எத்தனையோ மகான்கள் அத்தனை பேருக்கும் வந்தனம்” it was rendered by the team-vocal accompanied by violin and mridhangam. The prestigious guest heard the rendering with great attention and his body language expressed it all- he was so enthralled with the translation and the rendering. Then he openly appreciated the artists profusely and said the translation was ideal. For decades he has been hearing this ‘keerthana’ without understanding the full meaning and import of the song. He enquired about the person who translated the ‘keerthanas’ and he was shown the profile of the translator and Dr. kalam read it with great joy. He requested the artists to convey his appreciation and compliments to the translator.

A small memento Dr. Kalam

Then was his time for dinner. Knowing his taste ‘hot dosa and kuzippaniyaram’ with ‘coconut chatni and sambar served in hygienically cleaned plates. The guest relished the items and enquired as to who prepared such delicious food. When he was told that it was by the vocal artist, he made a comment: “Your rendering was so sweet and nice as is your dosa and kuzippaniyaram with tasty accompaniments. .You are a great musician and also a great cook. Your kuzippaniyaram and chatni a great combination as ypur melodious rendering perfectly matched with the mridhangam and violin!”

After a few snaps with the artists and others former President – dignitary Guest- left the house by 10.30 in the night.

Naturally the hosts could not sleep ruminating over the dream like visit of the former President His Excellency DR. Abdul Kalam to their abode in Madurai.

Great experience.!

Yes: who are the dramatic personae- in this lovely event on that happy night of 13th February 2015? That is the team of three musicians who with great efforts brought out the CD of Tamil Pancharathna Keerthanas at the instance of Dr. Meenakshi Pattabiraman, former English Professor, a poet, writer and scholar of Madurai.

Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity-September 12th.

11 October 2021 at 18:30
Day of respect for cultural diversity around the world in 2021 | Office Holidays

It is indeed unfortunate that CORONA plays spoilsports’ in the area cultural activities:

Impact of COVID-19 on the Cultural Sector

Cultural events cancelled, cultural institutions closed, community cultural practices suspended, empty UNESCO World Heritage sites, heightened risk of looting of cultural sites and poaching at natural sites, artists unable to make ends meet and the cultural tourism sector greatly affected… The impact of COVID-19 on the cultural sector is being felt around the world. This impact is social, economic and political – it affects the fundamental right of access to culture, the social rights of artists and creative professionals, and the protection of a diversity of cultural expressions.

The unfolding crisis risks deepening inequalities and rendering communities vulnerable. In addition, the creative and cultural industries (CCI) contribute US$2,250bn to the global economy (3% of GDP) and account for 29.5 million jobs worldwide. The economic fall-out of not addressing the cultural sector – and all auxiliary services, particularly in the tourism sector – could also be disastrous.

Protecting the diversity of cultural expressions is more important than ever

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed and magnified the creative industries’ pre-existing volatility. Due to the complex nature of their work, cultural professionals are particularly affected and lockdown measures around the world directly impact the entire creative value chain.

UNESCO has launched a page that aims to serve as a reference for those seeking to draw inspiration from best practices in the development of appropriate responses adapted to national contexts. UNESCO has also launched a weekly “Culture & COVID-19: Impact and Response Tracker” to provide an overview of the rapidly evolving situation.

Let us hope this situation changes and the cultural activities restart.

It is a matter of joy and satisfaction that

One of the biggest, and longest festivals that’s celebrated  ..

One of the biggest, and longest festivals that’s celebrated  ..

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore is hosting the annual Navaratri Music Series” now as its first major event after the Covid time regulations were eased.

These are held under the late Smt. Saroja Parasaran Memorial Endowment this October. The shows are in the main hall and open to all.

Senior artiste O S Arun was on stage on Tuesday evening but the audience was limited, perhaps due to the steady rain.

The concerts are from 4  to 15 October.

Let us enjoy the season! Great Days indeed!

International Day of the Girl Child-11th October.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD - October 11 - National Day Calendar

In the wonderful creation of Great God-My Lord Omniscient
All HIS creations-humans, animals, plants are all significant
Each to supplement and compliment others for harmony and
Peace, Joy and happiness-no discrimination! What so ever!

Alas! Within the humans due to male chauvinism girl child
Is looked at with dismay-cruel. Continues till her death quite unfair.
October Eleventh today observed as International Girl Child Day
Is observed as desired by the UNESCO!

With the objective of highlighting the inequalities
Faced by girls promoting awareness about the rights
Of a girl child, generating awareness on importance of
Girls’ Education, health and nutrition! Let us raise them in our society!

Progress for adolescent girls has not kept pace with the realities they face today, and COVID-19 has reinforced many of these gaps. This year, under the theme, “My Voice, Our Equal Future”, let’s seize the opportunity to be inspired by what adolescent girls see as the change they want, the solutions- big and small- they are leading and demanding across the globe.

In 2020, we commemorated 25 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – the global agenda for advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls, everywhere. Generation Equality was also launched in early 2020 as a multi-year, multi-partner campaign and movement for bold action on gender equality. A clear narrative and actions related to the needs and opportunities of adolescent girls and their solutions is central to the Generation Equality mission.

As adolescent girls worldwide assert their power as change-makers, International Day of the Girl will focus on their demands to: Very important.

  • Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS
  • Learn new skills towards the futures they choose
  • Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change

This week’s Sunday Story (Post Number 2643) is on a very great and significant theme which I have been seeing and experiencing right from my childhood days! That is WORLD POST DAY normally observed on NINTH OCTOBER.

At age past Eighty, with the same enthusiasm and interest I look forward for the coming of our ward POSTMAN every day, not withstanding the fact that I get and send hundreds of messages through What’s App and Gmail! Nowadays, writing letters have become rare thanks to fast developing electronic communication system in vogue. Yet, I eagerly await the magazines and books in which my poems-articles- find a place!!

Here he is:

Our loving Postman to deliver in front of our Block.-with more than 3 decades of service!

Today there are POSTWOMAN also giving the essential service.

No day passes off sans expecting the arrival of the POSTMAN!

My observation and experience from my boyish days- Seventy years ran!

Great Village postmaster a God for the villagers even today!

Not only delivering the TAPAL but also reading and

Explaining the content to the receivers poor un educated!

World Postal Day is celebrated on 9 October every year to raise awareness among people about the role of the postal sector for people and businesses every day. In 1874, the Universal Postal Union was established in Bern, Switzerland and its anniversary is declared as the World Postal Day by the Universal Postal Union Congress in Tokyo, Japan in 1969.

Government plans to transform India Post into a multi-service agency - The Economic Times
Indian Postal Service.

Other services include:

  • Post boxes and post bags for mail receipt.
  • Speed Post.
  • Identity cards for proof of residence.
  • India Post ATM.
  • RMS (Railway Mail Service)
  • Post office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK)
  • Aadhaar Enrollment and Updation.

For more than 150 years, the Department of Posts (DoP) has been the backbone of the country’s communication and has played a crucial role in the country’s social economic development. It touches the lives of Indian citizens in many ways: delivering mails, accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc. The DoP also acts as an agent for Government of India in discharging other services for citizens such as Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) wage disbursement and old age pension payments. With more than 1,55,000 post offices, the DoP has the most widely distributed postal network in the world.

On this SIGNIFICANT DAY let us pay our tributes to all those connected with the POSTAL SERVICES throughout the WORLD!

So we have as ITHACA 701 a poem by a famous Indian poet illustrated by a famous Indian painter.

GEOGRAPHIES
. . . as if love were a landscape
—Ornella Mariani
Let me move, push me,
let me join

far away countries and seas,
touch the sky with my hand.
It is you who make me move,

and I flow
with the winds
by the rivers of known
and unknown countries
by the geographies
of your heart,
countries that I have
never seen before.
All rivers lead me
to that promised land . . .
MARGARET SAINE, GERMANY

Words

All round me are words, and words and words,
They grow on me like leaves, they never
Seem to stop their slow growing
From within… But I tell myself, words
Are a nuisance, beware of them, they
Can be so many things, a
Chasm where running feet must pause, to
Look, a sea with paralyzing waves,

Friend’s throat… Words are a nuisance, but
They grow on me like leaves on a tree,
They never seem to stop their coming,
From a silence, somewhere deep within…

OCTOBER 7TH-NAVRATHRI COMMENCES!

6 October 2021 at 18:30
Navrathri dolls arrangement

Navaratri[ is a Hindu festival that spans nine nights (and ten days) and is celebrated every year in the autumn. It is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian cultural sphere. Theoretically, there are four seasonal Navaratri. However, in practice, it is the post-monsoon autumn festival called Sharada Navaratri that is the most observed in the honor of the divine feminine Devi (Durga). The festival is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October.

Celebrations include worshipping nine goddesses in nine days, stage decorations, recital of the legend, enacting of the story, and chanting of the scriptures of Hinduism. The nine days are also a major crop season cultural event, such as competitive design and staging of pandals, a family visit to these pandals, and the public celebration of classical and folk dances of Hindu culture. Hindu devotees often celebrate Navaratri by fasting. On the final day, called Vijayadashami, the statues are either immersed in a water body such as a river or ocean, or the statue symbolizing the evil is burnt with fireworks, marking the destruction of evil. The festival also starts the preparation for Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami.

I vividly and happily recollect the celebrations in my childhood. Arranging KOLU in our house, with all imaginations, putting up PARKS, MOUNTAINS etc. , evenings visiting friends house and eating snacks called SUNDAL different each of the ten days, some days sweets! Visiting temple after temple -near and far-in Karaikudi where I spent my FIRST TWENTY YEARS- from birth to completion of my college course.

Great occasion and festival indeed!

Happy Dasarrah!

Germany is Germany, America is America!

German-American Day is observed on Sixth October every year.

This day is celebrated as the German-American heritage day!

It celebrates German-American heritage and commemorates

the founding of Germantown, Pennsylvania (now part of Philadelphia) in 1683.

German Americans are Americans who have full or partial German ancestry.

With an estimated size of approximately 43 million in 2019, German Americans are the largest of the self-reported ancestry groups by the United States Census Bureau in its American Community Survey. German Americans account for about one third of the total population of people of German ancestry in the world.

Very few of the German states had colonies in the new world.

Let us all wish them a happy German-American Day! A great Day to congratulate!
